Godfather of Harlem is an American television series of the pay-TV -Senders Epix about the rise of African-American gangster Ellsworth Raymond "Bumpy" Johnson from Harlem , New York City during the 1960s.

The series was first published on Epix on September 29, 2019 and was streamed from November 14, 2019 with German synchronization on MagentaTV . In February 2020, Epix ordered a second season of the series.

Gangster boss Ellsworth Raymond "Bumpy" Johnson returns to the streets of Harlem in 1963, after ten years imprisonment in the maximum security prison Alcatraz - to the neighborhood in which he was a feared and at the same time respected gangster, which has been in the heroin swamp since then sinks and is only a shadow of himself.

On the day of his release, Bumpy received a message from the Italian-American Mafia from the local “ Genovese family ” in the form of violence, which was intended to make it clear to him that nothing would change in the current division of the territories. Bumpy, who in return demands a share of the profits from Vincent "Chin" Gigante - deputy boss of the Genovese family - but this is denied to him by Chin, makes it clear that he is ready for a war with him. While Chin tries to get permission for the murder of Bumpy from the " Commission " - the executive committee of the Mafia, he is protected by the former Genovese boss Frank Costello , who stands up for him and still gives his advice to other bosses Is well received.

One day Bumpy meets Malcolm X , an old friend and former gangster allied who is now the influential spokesman for the " Nation of Islam " and tries to lead Bumpy on a better path. Mutual feuds and assassinations with constantly changing coalitions between betrayal and corruption are now the order of the day, while the pursuit of wealth, recognition and revenge affects not only local gangsters, but also their families.

On April 25, 2018, it was announced that Epix had commissioned a first season with ten episodes, written by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, produced by ABC Signature Studios and Significant Productions , and that Forest Whitaker would play the lead role in gang boss "Bumpy" Johnson will play.
