Altbrunnstedt, North Friesland in 1942: The superstitious villagers see evil personified in a little boy named Eric and regard him as the "child of Satan". The latter suffers from strange daydreams about the return of a blindfolded little boy who was once left to his fate in the mudflats. She is convinced that the little boy is a gonger . At the same time she fears for the safety of her school friend Eike, as his death is heralded in her visions. At first nobody believes in this prediction.

Soon, mysterious incidents increase and Eike dies under mysterious circumstances. Warned by his sudden death, Philipp and Helma begin investigations separately from each other. More deaths follow. Philipp is also confronted with his own past. Eventually, both of them encounter evidence related to the legend. Her ancestors were responsible for the little boy's death. Eric, their defenseless victim, has now returned after years as a gonger to haunt and punish the grandchildren of his murderers.

Meanwhile, Philipp confronts Mayor Schwarz, whom he has now identified as the murderer of his parents. With a ruse he succeeds in convicting the unscrupulous community leader. A little later, Black becomes the gonger's last victim. In an open ending, Philipp defeats his childhood fears in a surreal scenario and evidently banishes the curse of the gonger, which he once triggered when he returned. Philipp and Helma look in harmony at the unsettling reincarnation of Eric, who, by saying that he is back, gives rise to new fears.
