The Jonte is a river in southern France that runs in the Occitania region . It rises in the Cevennes National Park , on the northwest flank of Mont Aigoual (1567 m), in the municipality of Gatuzières , generally drains in a westerly direction and after 39 kilometers flows into the Tarn as a left tributary at the municipal boundary of Le Rozier and Peyreleau . On its way, the Jonte crosses the Lozère department and in its lower reaches forms the border with the Aveyron department . Here it separates geologically the northern Causse Méjean from the southern Causse Noir by the approximately 500 meters deep Jont Gorge (French: Gorges de la Jonte) .

Hydrology

When the tide is low, the Jonte seeps away west of Meyrueis, only to reappear about eight kilometers downstream in a karst spring (French résurgence). A geographical peculiarity is that in Meyrueis the two tributaries Brèze and Béthuzon merge with the Jonte at a distance of almost 500 meters.
