Gostynin (German Gostynin , 1940–41 / 1942–45 Waldrode , 1941–42 guests ) is a town in Poland in the Masovian Voivodeship on the Left Skrwa and the capital of the rural community of Gostynin , to which it does not belong.
history
The first settlements in the area of today's Gostynin emerged during the 12th and 13th centuries. The place was mentioned for the first time in 1279 and in 1329 the seat of a castle bailiff . In 1382 the city was granted town charter according to Kulm law . In the 14th century, the city's first defensive structures were built with a wooden castle and a brick tower. In 1439 a wooden chapel was built in the castle. In 1532 the castle, where King Sigismund II August stayed, was rebuilt in 1552 . In 1611 the Russian Tsar Vasily Shuiski and his brothers Dimitri and Ivan were imprisoned in the castle . The city was badly destroyed during the war against the Swedes in the 18th century. In 1793 the place became part of Prussia and in 1807 part of the Duchy of Warsaw . In 1809 a fire raged in Gostynin and in 1815 the city became part of Congress Poland . In 1824 cloth makers came from German states and revitalized the local economy. The town hall was built, a laundry and a dye works. The market hall was built in 1832 and the Gostynin Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1879 . The first bookshop was opened in 1888. In 1904 construction began on the grammar school, which opened in 1911.
On September 16, 1939, German Wehrmacht troops reached Gostynin. The city became the seat of the district of Waldrode . During the Nazi era, many people were deported to the Dachau concentration camp or executed. On January 18, 1945, the time of occupation by the National Socialists ended for the place .
