Gottfried Schwarz (theologian)

Gottfried Schwarz (born November 19, 1707 in Zipser Neudorf (Igló) , † November 13, 1786 in Rinteln ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the businessman Samuel Schwarz († 1730) and his wife Judit († 1732, the daughter of the alderman in Iglau Johann König) moved to the high school in Leutschau at the age of six and later the high school in Eperies . In 1726 he moved to the University of Jena , where Gottlieb Stolle (1673–1744) in particular had an influence on him and introduced him to philosophy, literature and church history. He also attended historical lectures with Christian Gottlieb Buder (1693–1763) and Martin Schmeizel (1679–1747), Johann Franz Buddeushe heard theology, practical and theoretical philosophy from Johann Heinrich Köhler (-1737), from Leonard Hoffmann (-1737) he was taught in the Hebrew and Syrian languages ​​and he attended lectures from Georg Erhard Hamberger (1697-1755) to mathematics and physics.

In 1730 he became vice rector in Leutschau, in 1731 he became rector of the grammar school and in 1734 went to Pest to end a family trial. There he met the legal scholar Bohus and completed studies in his library. In 1738 he resigned from the rector's office in Leutschau to complete an educational trip through Germany. He traveled to Vienna , Nuremberg , Frankfurt am Main and continued his studies at the University of Marburg under Christian Wolff and Johann Konrad Spangenberg (1711–1783) .

Via Kassel , Göttingen , Gotha and the University of Jena , he came to the University of Halle in 1739 , where he obtained a master’s degree in the same year and then gave philosophical lectures. In 1742 he left Halle and became rector of the grammar school in Osnabrück , in 1749 he went to Rinteln University as a professor of theology , he was superintendent of the Grafschaft Schaumburg and assessor in the consistory . In the same year he also became an honorary member of the German Society in Göttingen. In 1750 he acquired the theological doctorate at the University of Helmstedt . In 1782 he resigned from his superintendent's position for reasons of age.

Act

Schwarz worked scientifically in the fields of theology, philosophy, history and coinage. He liked to work on the history of Hungary. His master’s thesis, published in 1739, met with such interest in his home country, especially through the bishop in Raab, that it was published in several editions. Schwarz was a sympathizer of the Enlightenment, who wrote numerous of his own writings, especially theological content.

Schwarz was married twice. His first marriage was in Osnabrück in 1743 with Regina Maria Lübke († April 1, 1745). The son Johann Ludolph Schwarz († 1763 in Osnabrück) comes from this marriage. His second marriage was in 1750 with Gerhardine Brouning, daughter of secret secretary Carl Wilhelm Brouning. This marriage remained childless.
