The Graf-Friedrich-Schule (GFS) is a grammar school in Diepholz , Lower Saxony , with around 900 students and 73 teachers (as of 2019). It was founded in 1923 and named after Count Friedrich II of Diepholz , who established the first rules for the Diepholz school system from 1576–1585.
The current school building is located in the Diepholz school center on Thouarsstraße. Until 1974, the school on Hindenburgstrasse was housed in the building that today houses a special needs school , the Dr. Kinghorst School, named after the former headmaster of the GFS and local researcher Wilhelm Kinghorst . The course of the river Hunte runs right next to today's Graf Friedrich School . Due to its location, the school has access to a sports hall , a sports field and an indoor swimming pool , which, however, is primarily for the public.
Partial renovation and partially new construction
In the course of a structural examination after the collapse of the Bad Reichenhall ice rink in January 2006, it turned out that the Graf Friedrich School had considerable structural defects. Among other things, fire protection regulations were not complied with. As an ad hoc measure, numerous fire alarm systems were first installed and the mold infestation was removed in 18 rooms. After an intensive discussion in the school and the public about renovation or new building, the district council decided on March 12, 2007 by a majority to renovate the three-story middle section of the school, but to replace the remaining parts with new buildings. After the construction work began in November 2007, the building was ready for occupancy in August 2011. The renovation with partially new buildings cost around 8.5 million euros. There are now a main building, an administration wing and a science wing. The individual buildings are connected by glass transitions.
new media
In the 2001/02 school year, the first notebook class was set up in grade 11 at the JRC , in which each student was equipped with his own notebook. In the 2003/04 school year, the devices were partially supplemented by their own devices. More than half of the new students in grade 7 of the 2003/04 school year went to a notebook class. In this case, the devices are financed by the parents and, unlike the computers in grade 11, are privately owned.
This made the school one of the first state schools in Lower Saxony to have several notebook classes. The school is equipped with 54 Mbit / s wireless LAN according to the 802.11a / g standard . There is also a wired network that supplies the stationary computers in the school management and the computer rooms. Thanks to this above-average experience in the IT sector, the Graf-Friedrich-Schule was even represented with a booth at CeBIT in Hanover in 2001 as part of the Lower Saxony Multimedia Initiative .
The school also has a computer room with around 30 computers, which is now being looked after by an external company, separate from the rest of the Internet. For the first time in a long time, part of the network is based on Microsoft Windows. The GFS itself is also active in the field of open source software development. For example, Moodle is used for communication between teachers and students.
International contacts
The school, which received the title of European School in 2001 , maintains close contacts with schools in the Diepholz partner cities, Thouars in France and Starogard Gdański in Poland , with which regular student exchanges take place in the ninth grade.
In addition, the GFS is the only German school to take part in the Global Classroom project, in which ten schools worldwide and the University of Cambridge ( Great Britain ) are participating.
The Learning School project makes it possible to spend a voluntary social year in several countries with host families.
Sponsorship run
In 2012, a sponsored run called "BioTop Run" was held for the first time. In this run of the 6th to 8th grades, between 7,000 and 8,000 euros were earned. The money went towards the reactivation of the school garden. The BioTop run was organized by the environmental committee and the student council.
Musical week
The Music Week is always carried out since the spring of 2011 in the last week before the Easter holidays. All students from the music groups take part in this excursion. The trips in 2011 and 2012 both went to Bad Essen to Haus Sonnenwinkel .
