Grahamland (outdated Grahamsland , also King Oskar II Land ) is according to British nomenclature that part of the Antarctic Peninsula in West Antarctica that lies north of a line between Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz . Palmerland lies south of this line . The northernmost branch of Grahamland is the Trinity Peninsula .

The offshore islands were discovered on February 21, 1832 by an English Antarctic expedition under John Biscoe . The country is named after the Admiral of the Royal Navy , James Robert George Graham . It was declared British territory in 1908. In 1936 people set foot in this area for the first time. The British Graham Land Expedition , led by John Rymill , had the goal of more detailed exploration of this area, which during this expedition turned out to be part of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Grahamland is 383,000 km², the largest of the three sub-areas of the British Antarctic Territory . In addition to Great Britain, Argentina and Chile also lay claim to the Antarctic Peninsula, including the area internationally known as Graham Land. The neighboring states base their claims on scientific evidence that Graham Land and the surrounding islands are the natural continuation of the South American mainland. With the Esperanza station, Argentina is the only country to maintain a permanently inhabited civilian settlement on the mainland of the peninsula in order to substantiate its territorial claims on the area of Antarctica it claims. With the Antarctic Treaty , however, all the states concerned have committed to rest their territorial claims.
