Grail is a scattered settlement in the market town of Edelschrott in western Styria .
Place name and geography
The origin of the place name cannot be clearly interpreted due to the uncertain documentary tradition. It could be derived from the old German nickname Crowil , which could have served as a court and owner name . But it could also be derived from the Middle High German kröuwel , krewel or kreul , which means something like fork with bent prongs , which was used as a nickname or nickname for a person.
Grail is located in the southwestern part of the market town of Edelschrott, south of the main town of Edelschrott and the village of Modriach , and relatively central in the cadastral municipality of Modriach. The Grailerbach , a tributary of the Modriachbach, flows past the village in the west and north .
history
Grail emerged from a high medieval clearing settlement, which consisted of individual farms located in wastelands . The first documentary mention was made in 1434 as Greyl , although it is unclear whether the present-day place is meant. Further mentions were made in 1542 as Greull , 1627/29 as Greull and Grall and finally in 1900 as Grail .
The inhabitants of the place belonged to Modriach until the abolition of the manorial system in 1848. Grail belonged to the advertising district of the Ligist rule .
Economy and Infrastructure
Grail is characterized by agriculture.
The local children attend the elementary school in Modriach.
