Edelschrott is a market town with 1715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the judicial district or district of Voitsberg , Styria . On January 1, 2015, the municipality of Modriach was incorporated as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform.

Place name

The name Edelschrott is made up of the two syllables precious and scrap . The name part precious derived from the Slavic personal names gels from which, in turn, from the Slavic word jelenŭ * goes back for deer. In the 15th century attempts were made to combine the place name with alder in terms of folk etymology , whereby at the end of the 18th century the word alder was transformed into the dialect word Edel . The second syllable of the place name -schrott comes from Middle High German schrôt , which means something like cut off or cut off piece and was a common name for clearing in the 9th and 10th centuries . The place name is thus a German-Slavic composition and means something like clearing area of ​​the gel .

The market town of Edelschrott is located in the southwestern part of the Voitsberg district, about 20 kilometers west of the provincial capital Graz . The market is located in a mountainous region with several notch valleys and extends over several ridges, which are formed in the north and southwest by the foothills of the Pack and Stubalpe and in the rest of the municipality by the foothills of the Koralpe . The municipality is traversed in the northern part from west to east by the Teigitsch and in the southern part in a northeastern direction by the Modriachbach . In the north, the Frei-Gößnitzbach and the Gößnitzbach form the municipal boundary to Maria Lankowitz and Köflach . In the east the Schinderbach , the Teigitsch and the Nießen Bach form the border to Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg while in the northwest the Teigitsch and the Packer Bach partially form the border to Hirschegg-Pack .

The area of ​​the market town is 87.69 km², of which 78.47 km² (as of 2010) is used as agricultural and forestry area. The center of the village is a Kirchweiler and lies at an altitude of 793 meters, while the Gfallkogel on the municipal border with Hirschegg-Pack is the highest point in the municipality at 1527 meters.

The packer reservoir is located partly in the municipal area, as well as the two reservoirs along the Teigitsch ( Hirzmann reservoir , Langmann reservoir ).

The market community is divided into three cadastral communities , which were originally all independent communities, and three localities. The village of Modriach is located in the south-western part of the municipality and the Rotte Stampf is located in the west, directly on the Teigitsch . There are also some scattered settlements .

The following cities, communities and localities border the community Edelschrott in a clockwise direction: in the north the market community Maria Lankowitz with the scattered settlements Hochgößnitz , Strantzgraben and Kuhschweif . In the northeast, the municipality of Köflach with the Puchbach district and the Hans Giegerl settlement and in the east the municipality of Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg with the village of Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg and the scattered settlement Nießenbach borders on Edelschrott. Incorporations

On January 1, 1952, the previously independent municipality of Kreuzberg was merged with the municipality of Edelschrott. On January 1, 2015, as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform, the municipality of Modriach was merged with Edelschrott to form the newly created market municipality of Edelschrott.

climate

In the community of Edelschrott there is a continental , cold-temperate climate , which is influenced on the one hand by the protected location in a mountain range , but also by the shielding by the main Alpine ridge . This location favors the development of local valley and slope wind systems as well as regional but also modified gradient winds . The strongest ventilation takes place in spring, in locations over 1000 meters in winter and the main wind direction is west to southwest. Most of the precipitation falls in summer, while the winters tend to have little precipitation. The region has a high probability of thunderstorms.

There can be significant rainfall throughout the year, with the maximum in summer and the minimum in winter. The average annual rainfall is 1044 mm. The month with the lowest precipitation is January with a rainfall of 46 mm. On the other hand there is July, which is the wettest month with an average of 139 mm. The annual mean temperature is 5.9 ° C. The warmest month is July with an average of 16.4 ° C. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature is −4.8 ° C.

history

The oldest evidence of a settlement in the area around Edelschrott is a coin from the Roman Empire , the exact location of which is not known. Today's noble scrap originated in the 11th or 12th century as a single yard settlement with deserted corridors. The place was first mentioned as Gelenschro (e) t on January 12, 1245 in a deed of donation from the Piber parish by the land clerk Witigo von Steiermark . Further mentions were made in 1381 as gela meal , 1399 as geline meal , 1493/1494 as Erlschrott , 1588 in a letter as Edlschrott and finally in 1822 as Edelschrott .

For the year 1318 it is known that Ulrich von Graden received around 100 quadruplets of grain as tithe from Edelschrott, Herzogberg and Kreuzberg. In the 14th century, the lords of Leibnitz had several goods in precious scrap. In 1850, with the constitution of the free municipalities, the independent municipality Edelschrott was founded. Already in 1946 there was a planned administrative partnership with the Kreuzberg community , but this failed due to a lack of agreement. On January 1, 1952, the Kreuzberg community was finally incorporated into Edelschrott. On January 1, 1953, the Wöllmißberg area of ​​the municipality of Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg also became part of Edelschrott. In 1995 Edelschrott was bought by Governor Josef Krainer jun. raised to the market town . On January 1, 2015, as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform, the municipality of Modriach was merged with Edelschrott to form the newly created market municipality of Edelschrott.

The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from July 1, 1967. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took effect on November 20, 2015.
The new blazon is:

"In a shield divided by blue and gold, a golden deer head above, a red grating below."

The deer head describes the name of the community as a talking coat of arms, which in its oldest form is "Gelenschroet" (from Slavic jelen = deer). The lower field shows the attribute of St. Lawrence to whom the parish church is consecrated: the glowing torture.

Two-lined (blue-yellow) and three-lined (blue-red-yellow) with the coat of arms are used as municipal flags.

• In the community there is a local school center with a music elementary school, which has been piloted for 25 years.

The five places Hirschegg and Pack together with the places Edelschrott, Modriach and Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg form the Styrian Backpacking Villages Tourist Association. The Hans Kloepfer circular hiking trail leads through the municipality's capital and along the Hirzmann reservoir .

Infrastructure

• A police station of the Voitsberg district police station has been established in Edelschrott . She is locally responsible for the communities Edelschrott, Hirschegg-Pack and Sankt Martin am Wöllmißberg.
• After many post office closings in 2005, the Edelschrott post office became the central distributor for several surrounding communities. There are also some commercial and industrial companies, a general practitioner with a medicine cabinet and a dentist in the village.
• Every six months, the “central cattle market” takes place in Edelschrott, where cattle are mainly traded.

The Packer Straße B 70 and the Süd Autobahn A2 run through Edelschrott, with the Modriach exit providing a separate connection to the motorway network.
