Foothills
As Edge Mountains in the will geomorphology longer Mountains called, either
- is on a continental margin or
- a plateau at the side of the lowland closes off or
- a basin landscape partially bordered.
The 1st type includes, among others
- in Africa and Eurasia: Atlas and Tell Atlas , Apennines , Dinarides , Taurus Mountains , Zagros , Western Ghats , Sichote-Alin and the Cape Belt .
- in America: Appalachian Mountains , Alaska Range , Rocky Mountain Coast Mountains , Sierra Madre and the Andes .
The second type includes Sierra Nevada and Sierra Morena , Vosges and Black Forest (edge mountains of the Rhine Rift), Carpathian Mountains (to Pannonia), Taurus and Pontus Mountains (to the Anatolian highlands ), Kuhrud (to the Iranian highlands ), Tianshan (on both sides to Kazakhstan and Taklamakan), Himalaya and Kunlun (to the highlands of Tibet ) and the Great Dividing Range (Australia).
The third type includes some of the marginal mountains of the Pannonian and Vienna basins , the Klausenburger and the Styrian marginal mountains or some mountain ranges in north-east and south Anatolia (Taurus).
However, this typification is only morphological and has only to do with mountain formation to a limited extent . The geologically related Alpidic mountain folds, which range from the Pyrenees to the Alps , Carpathians, Balkans and Iran to the Himalayas, include mountains of both morphological types, but which are roughly the same age.
