The Kuhrud Mountains ( Persian کوههای کوهرود Kuhha-ye Kuhrud ) is one of the larger mountain ranges of Iran . It is about 1000 km long and with some peaks reaches heights of over 4000 meters.

In part, it is viewed as the eastern edge of the larger Zagros mountain system, which runs parallel to the Kuhrud about 200 to 300 km to the west. There are a number of important cities in the highlands between the two orogenes, including a. Arak , Isfahan , Nadschafābād and Quomsheh . The most important rivers originating in this region, which in the further course almost all flow into salt lakes as inland rivers , are the Qom (river) (in the northeast of the Kuhrud), the Zayandeh (in the middle, near Isfahan) and Shur Ab and Namaki (in the southeast near Kerman ).

geography

The Kuhrud (Pers. Kūh = "mountain") stretches about 900 km from the city of Qom ( Tehran Province ) in a southeastern direction to the border of the provinces of Kerman and Lorestan and forms the transition from the Iranian highlands to the deserts of the interior . Near the city of Kerman , it divides into two mountain ranges that diverge in a Y-shape, the north of which reaches a height of 4,374 m in Kuh-e Laleh Zar .

To the east the mountain range merges into that of Kuh-e Jebal Barez and the mountains of Baluchistan . In the middle part - near the city of Yazd  - is the four-thousand-meter Shir Kuh (4,075 m), but a little further north near the city of Isfahan the peaks are only just over 3,000 m. In the northern third - not far from Natanz  - they rise again to 3,896 m in Kuh-e Karkas .

Parallel to the Kuhrud, about 200 km to the west, the multi-articulated mountain chains of the Zagros run , which is 1500 km long and also slightly higher. The frequency of earthquakes is only slightly lower in the Kuhrud than in the Zagros.

geology

Geologically , the central Iranian mountains belong to the “young” Alpine chain mountains from the Miocene , which stretch from southern Europe over the Alps , Carpathians , the Balkans and Turkey to the Elburs Mountains and the Persian Gulf . In the east, this continuous mountain range of Eurasia continues over the Hindu Kush , Karakoram and Himalayas to East Asia .

Culture

Between the Kuhrud and Zāgros mountains there are elongated plateaus with some inland rivers . These ensure a relatively pleasant climate in the provinces around the city of Isfahan and flow into some salt lakes . Even larger salt pans can be found east of the Kuhrud, where the Namaksee (halfway between Tehran and Kaschan ) occupies about 50 × 50 km and forms the transition to the Great Salt Desert Dascht-e Kawir .

Goats were probably domesticated for the first time in prehistory in the high areas west of the Kuhrud and in the Zagros . Some Indo-European ethnic groups have their origin here.
