The Greif was a German direction finder . The owner was the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) and the ship was operated by the Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority at the time . The launch took place in 1942, the completion of the ship took place in 1946 at the former Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven .

The ship was on a four-stroke - eight-cylinder - Diesel engine manufacturer's MaK Maschinenbau Kiel with a power of 552  kW driven, who worked on a fixed-pitch propeller. The ship also had a bow thruster .

The ship was used for sea surveys in the North Sea and for surveying the Lower Elbe and the East . With the data obtained on this ship, the changes in depths due to dredging work are controlled. The ship was u. a. equipped with an echo sounder and a DGPS system. For use in shallow water, the ship had two DF dinghies built by Fassmer in 1983 . The boats were 6.70 m long, 2.30 m wide and had a draft of max. 0.90 m. The boats were powered by six-cylinder diesel engines made by Volvo Penta with an output of 110 kW, which acted on a Z-drive . Like the Griffin , they had a. via an echo sounder and a DGPS system.

The Greif covered approx. 22,000 DF kilometers annually in the area of ​​the WSA Cuxhaven.

The ship was decommissioned on January 10, 2011 and then sold to a Dutch company via VEBEG GmbH for 100,000 euros. The ship left Cuxhaven on March 7, 2011 and was sold to a Dutch scrapping yard in 2014 .
