The Große Steinau in the community-free Harz region of the Lower Saxony district of Göttingen is a 7.5 km long, northern and orographically right tributary of the Sieber in the Harz and at the southwestern Harzfuß.

The Große Steinau rises in the Upper Harz in the Harz National Park on the Auf dem Acker ridge , which is 865.1  m above sea level. NHN is high. Its source is about 3 km north-northeast of Lonau, which is not traversed by the stream, between the Haspelkopf (approx.  749  m ) in the north-northeast and the Braakberg ( 645.5  m ) in the south-southeast near the Sophienklippe at a height of just over 680  m .

Initially, the Große Steinau flows in a south-westerly direction and later in a southerly direction through the wooded Harz landscape. After leaving the national park for good when crossing under the district road  7 ( Mühlenberg - Aschenhütte ), the stream enters the southwestern Harz foreland , where it first crosses the Herzberg – Seesen railway line and then the 243 federal road .

Shortly thereafter , the Große Steinau flows about 2.6 km northwest of Herzberg am Harz and 750 m southeast of the Hörden hamlet of Aschenhütte at the mouth of the Kleine Steinau at around 216  m into the Sieber tributary of the Oder , which flows there from the south-southeast .

Infiltration and desertification

In dry times, the water of the Große Steinau seeps completely into the karst underground before the mouth and reappears in the Rhume spring about four days later . In the lower valley of the Große Steinau, the Steynowe desert is suspected, but it has not yet been localized.
