geography

location

The Große Kellenberg is located in the TERRA.vita nature and geopark , which is particularly common in the Wiehen Mountains and in the north of the Teutoburg Forest, a little further south. It rises in the northeast of the urban area of Melle , whose core city is 10.3 km southwest of the summit.

Around the elevation are Buer (3.7 km southwest) with the towns of Meesdorf (2.6 km west), Markendorf (2 km southwest) and Löhlingdorf (2.7 km southwest), the localities Linken (1.8 km) south) and Eggendorf (2.1 km south-south-east), which are all in the Meller urban area, as well as Büscherheide (1.7 km north-east) and Barkhausen (3.1 km north-west) in the municipality of Bad Essen . In addition, there are the Meller farmers Wildenberg (1.3 km northeast) and the Meller settlement Thörenwinkel on the southwest slope. Beyond the border with North Rhine-Westphalia , 930 m southeast of the summit, lies the core town of the Rödinghausen community (2.5 km southeast) in the Herford district and the Prussian Oldendorfer district of Börninghausen (3.5 km east-northeast) in the Minden-Lübbecke district Eininghausen (2.5 km northeast).

Although the Große Kellenberg is the highest point in the Lower Saxon part of the main mountain ridge, it is not the highest in the city of Melle; this lies with the Diedrichsberg ( 219  m ) in the Meller Mountains , a mountain range south of the Wiehengebirge. The next higher elevation is the 2.1 km east-southeast located Nonnenstein (Rödinghauser Berg; 237.6  m ), and 2 km north-west is the Kleine Kellenberg (approx.  160  m ). The Schwarze Brink ( 213  m ) , located 3 km north in the Egge , a northern side ridge of the Wiehengebirge, is also somewhat higher.

On the wooded Großer Kellenberg there are parts of the landscape protection area Wiehengebirge and northern Osnabrück hill country ( CDDA no. 390425; designated 2009; 288.348  km² in size).

Natural allocation

The Große Kellenberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Lower Weserbergland (No. 53) and in the main unit Eastern Wiehengebirge (532) to the subunit Bad Essener Heights (532.0). The landscape leads north into the sub-unit Oldendorfer Berge (532.1). To the south it leads through the valley of the Drücke-Mühlenbach into the Quernheimer Hügelland (531.01) and to the southwest to the west into the Meesdorfer Heights (531.00); Both natural areas belong to the main unit Ravensberger Mulde ( Ravensberger Hügelland ; 531) to the subunit Quernheimer Hügel- und Bergland (531.0).

Waters

In the valley between the Großer Kellenberg and the east- south- east lying Nonnenstein ( 237.6  m ) is the Green Lake , through which the Drücke-Mühlenbach flows. The Glanebach rises north-northeast of the elevation between Wildenberg and Büscherheide . Although it is located on the main ridge, there is no distinctive watershed over the Großer Kellenberg, because both the Drücke-Mühlenbach and the Glanebach flow into the Hunte, which flows through the Wiehengebirge 1.7 km west of the elevation in a south-south-east-north-north-west direction.

Transport links and hiking

Immediately to the east and south of the Großer Kellenberg runs - in sections in the valley of the Drücke-Mühlenbach, which passes the elevation and flows through the Green Lake - between the Wildenberg community and the village of Linken in a north-north-east-south-south-west direction, the district road  203 (Kellenbergstrasse) . Near the lake lies hikers parking Green Lake , and the lake is farmed on weekends Seehütte .

The European long-distance hiking trail E11 leads directly past the Thörenwinkel settlement on the south-west slope of the elevation in the area between Barkhausen in the north-west and Rödinghausen in the south-east . The 3rd stage ends on the elevation and the 4th stage of the Wittekindsweg begins . The 3.13 km long Großer Kellenberg circular route leads around the elevation .
