history
The name Großpriel comes from the local knight Otto von Pru (o) lle and was first mentioned in 1229 in a document from Melks Abbey. The place was under the rule of Zelking for the entire Middle Ages . After the abolition of the manorial rulers in the course of the revolution in 1848, modern local congregations emerged according to the provisional municipal law of March 17, 1849, which was valid throughout the monarchy. The community of Großpriel was thus given legal personality. In 1864, however, Großpriel was already part of the local community Schrattenbruck, which today also belongs to Melk.
In 1967 the local community Schrattenbruck voluntarily merged with the local community Spielberg to form the community Spielberg-Schrattenbruck. Two years later, in 1970, the municipality of Spielberg was merged with the municipality of Melk to form today's municipality of Melk as part of the major Lower Austrian municipality reform.
Roman finds were discovered in 2006. This led to the assumption that the previously known Roman settlement Namare is not - as previously assumed - in Melk, but that the settlement discovered in Großpriel corresponds to this Roman place.
In September 2013, the place got a lot of attention due to the bloody act of the transport company and poacher Alois Huber. On the night of September 16-17, he shot three policemen and a paramedic in the course of a rampage and a hostage-taking, and then killed himself in his house in Großpriel.
