Guðmundur Benediktsson (born September 3, 1974 in Reykjavík ), also called Gummi Ben , is a former Icelandic football player and current coach. He works as a football commentator for the state television channel Ríkisútvarpið .
life and career
Club career
Guðmundur Benediktsson completed his first assignment for Þór Akureyri in 1990 at the age of 16 . This was followed by his debut in the Úrvalsdeild , before he moved to Belgium to Germinal Ekeren at the age of 18 , for whom he played in four league games within three seasons. After his contract expired in 1994 Guðmundur returned to Þór Akureyri and developed under head coach Ásgeir Elíasson to a high performer and national team player. After a successful season, he went to KR Reykjavík in the winter of 1994 , with whom he was runner-up three times ( 1995 , 1996 and 1998 ) and won the Icelandic Football Cup twice (1995 and 1999). He won three Pepsideild championships with KR in 1999 , 2000 and 2002 . He then turned his back on Iceland and went back to Belgium, where he played in 15 Eerste class A games for KFC Verbroedering Geel in the 1999/2000 season. In the summer of 2000 he returned to KR and completed 53 games for the club by November 2004. In 2005 he moved to Valur Reykjavík and won the Icelandic Cup and the 2007 championship. In 2009 he returned to KR Reykjavík for a third time at the end of his career and ended his active career after the season and 20 games for KR.
National team career
He made his senior international debut in the 1994 friendly game between the Icelanders and the United Arab Emirates , where he also scored his first international goal. Guðmundur played his tenth and last international match in January 2001 against Chile.
Coaching career
Half a year after his retirement, Guðmundur Benediktsson became head coach of UMF Selfoss , but was fired after one season. In the 2011 game he took over the position of assistant coach at the side of Ólafur Kristjánsson at Breiðablik Kópavogur , who he replaced as head coach in 2014. After a seventh place in 2014, he was replaced as head coach of Breiðablik by Arnar Grétarsson and went to KR Reykjavík as an assistant coach . In June 2016 he was given leave of absence as an assistant coach of KR Reykjavík due to continued unsuccessfulness.
Television career
In addition to his career as a football coach, Guðmundur acts as an expert and commentator for the state broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið . At RÚV, he comments on football matches and is a commentator on the 2016 European Football Championship . He received international attention because of his enthusiastic reporting.
Personal
Guðmundur is married to the granddaughter of the Icelandic national soccer player Albert Guðmundsson and former soccer player and current coach Helga Kristbjörg Ingadóttir . The couple has a son, Albert Guðmundsson , who is an active football player under contract with PSV Eindhoven .
