Guidan Roumdji (also: Guidan Roumji ) is a municipality and the capital of the Guidan Roumdji department in Niger .

geography

Guidan Roumdji is located at the transition from the Sudan to the Sahel zone and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the southwest . There is a border crossing at the village of Souloulou . The neighboring communities in Niger are Bangui in the northwest, Dan-Goulbi in the north, Chadakori in the northeast and Guidan Sori in the southeast. The urban area is divided into eight districts, 57 administrative villages, 81 traditional villages, twelve hamlets and three camps. The districts are called Angoual Roumdji, Limantchi, Malamey, Massalatchi, Nakoiri I, Nakori, Nakori II and Quartier Administratif.

The Forêt classée de Guidan Roumdji is a 2100 hectare protected forest area in the municipality of Guidan Roumdji. It was placed under protection in 1952.

history

The name Guidan Roumdji means "butcher's house". Originally it was a small village of butchers from Nigeria who specialized in the secret slaughter of stolen cattle. The city is an old market town. The first market was created in pre-colonial times.

In 1972 Guidan Roumdji became the capital of the newly created arrondissement Guidan Roumdji, later the department of the same name. In 2002 the urban area was expanded to include the surrounding canton of Guidan Roumdji.

population

At the 1977 census, Guidan Roumdji had 3,006 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 7,020 people and at the 2001 census 10,269 people. At the 2012 census, after the urban area expanded, the population was 95,791. The population consists of Hausa , Fulbe and Tuareg . The central common language is Hausa .

Economy and Infrastructure

The economic activities in Guidan Roumdji extend to agriculture, livestock, trade, handicrafts and fish farming. Millet, sorghum , beans, sesame and sorrel are grown as well as - in the river bed of a wadi and on its banks - tomatoes, pumpkins, honeydew melons, green beans, watermelons and corn. The animal husbandry practiced by all ethnic groups affects cattle, sheep, goats and camels. Fish farming and traditional beekeeping are important sources of income.

There is a cattle market in Guidan Roumdji. The market day is Sunday. The trade is diverse, with the priority goods being agricultural products, products of the manufacturing sector, clothing and spices. The handicraft businesses in the city include blacksmiths, weaving shops and pottery shops. Guidan Roumdji is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). The city is on National Road 1 , which is part of the international Dakar-N'Djamena Highway .
