Life
Already in his home country Marchena played drums in various rock bands . In 1970 he moved to Amsterdam , where he mainly performed with bands in the city's clubs. In 1974 he went to Munich and played for a while with Klaus Doldinger's band Passport . Together with Freddie Santiago from Puerto Rico , he was a founding member of Sigi Schwab's Percussion Academia in 1978 . The world music ensemble played together for 15 years and went on numerous tours. In 1978 the trio produced two television programs for the Jazz-In series, a co-production of Swiss television and SWF, together with Brazilian trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos and New York bassist Mark Egan .
After several other projects - including Marchena was also lead singer of the hard rock band Maniacs - 1987 wrote Siegfried Schwab the soundtrack for ZDF - Christmas series Anna . He then recorded the key song My Love Is a Tango with Marchena as a singer. The song rose to number 1 in the German single charts in January 1988 and stayed there for two weeks - the single sold around 600,000 times.
For Guillermo Marchena it was the only excursion into the charts. The follow-up single Time for Lovers only reached 46th place in April 1988 the German airplay - charts . He remained loyal to Sigi Schwab until 1994, when the singer fell seriously ill. He died before his 48th birthday in his homeland on Curaçao of complications from his AIDS illness. Marchena's last recordings were published posthumously in 1995 under the title Mandala Sigi Schwab + Percussion Project . The ensemble name Percussion Academia was renamed Percussion Project by Sigi Schwab after Marchena's death .
