Gunnar Säve-Söderbergh

Gunnar Säve-Söderbergh (born January 31, 1910 in Falun , † June 8, 1948 ) was a Swedish paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Säve-Söderbergh was born in Falun as the son of the neurologist Gotthard Söderbergh and Inga Säve. He completed his school education in Gothenburg in 1928 and later studied at Uppsala University . In 1937 he became professor of geology and historical geology in Uppsala. His brother Torgny Säve-Söderbergh (1914-1998) was an Egyptologist and father of Bengt Säve-Söderbergh (* 1940), a former ambassador and state secretary .

Säve-Söderbergh took part in Lauge Koch's Greenland expeditions from 1931 to 1934 and 1936 , from which he brought back fossils from Ichthyostega , which at that time represented the earliest known tetrapods . Säve-Söderbergh published a preliminary report on these findings in 1932. Säve-Söderbergh also collected fossils in Cyprus (1930), England and Scotland (1934), and Estonia (1936) and studied the biostratigraphy of the Paleozoic in East Greenland as well as scientific questions on the homology of the skull bones in fish and tetrapods. He also examined the cranial anatomy of Stegocephalia from the Triassic from East Greenland and Svalbard and in lungfish from the Devonian . Other work by Säve-Söderbergh deals with comparative studies with the lateral line organ and the analysis of the muscles in lower tetrapods.

A tuberculosis disease prevented Säve-Söderbergh's further career. He died in a sanatorium in Solbacken in Dalarna . His research on the Devonian tetrapods Ichthyostega were by Erik Jarvik continued. Säve-Söderbergh was made an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1942 and a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1948 .
