Gustav von Steinsdorff

Bogislav Heinrich Gustav von Steinsdorff (born May 15, 1825 in Nauen , † December 22, 1897 in Kassel ) was a Prussian major general and most recently the commander of the 17th infantry brigade.

Life

origin

His parents were Friedrich Ludwig August Heinrich von Steinsdorff (* 1777, † 1838) and his wife Johanna Marie Auguste, born. Kraemer (* 1796; † 1882). His father was a Prussian major a. D. and most recently place major in Torgau.

Career

He received his education at the city school in Nauen. He then became a cadet in Potsdam on September 3, 1837 and then came to Berlin as a cadet on August 9, 1839 . From there he was transferred to the 29th Infantry Regiment on February 9, 1842 as a second lieutenant with a patent on October 27, 1842 . From April 1, 1847 to March 31, 1848 he was assigned to the 8th Combined Reserve Battalion. He was then assigned to the General War School on October 10, 1850 . He was then used from November 19, 1850 to January 23, 1853 in the 30th Infantry Brigade, during which time he was posted to the General War School on February 24, 1861. On his return he was appointed regimental adjutant and promoted to prime lieutenant on November 10, 1855. Then he was posted from May 26, 1856 to February 28, 1859 in the topographical department of the General Staff . After his return he was promoted to captain on March 12, 1859 and transferred to the war school in Erfurt as a teacher on September 6, 1859, to which he was placed à la suite of the 29th Infantry Regiment. On September 4, 1860, he came back as a company commander in the 29th Infantry Regiment, and on October 23, 1863 he was transferred to the 69th Infantry Regiment.

During the German War of 1866 he fought near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . He was then transferred to the newly acquired 87th Infantry Regiment as a major on October 30, 1866 . Then he came on March 16, 1869 as commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 19th Infantry Regiment.

During the Franco-Prussian War he took part in the sieges of Metz , Peronne and Mezieres. He also fought at Noisseville , Bapaume , St. Quentin and the battles at Chieulles, Rupigny and Believue. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on October 19, 1870 and the Iron Cross 1st Class on April 5, 1871 .

After the war he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 18, 1871 and transferred to the 36th infantry regiment as commander on May 23, 1873. On September 2, 1873 he was promoted to colonel. On November 1, 1879, he was transferred to the 17th Infantry Brigade as commander and at the same time appointed major general. On January 23, 1881, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and was then put up for retirement on May 23, 1882 . He was also awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle. He died on December 22, 1897 in Kassel.

Steinsdorff married on November 20, 1857 in Coburg the Wilhelmine Freiin von Lepel (* March 14, 1832, † March 1923), a daughter of Baron Georg Ferdinand von Lepel . The couple had several children:
