Gustav von Zahn

Gustav Wilhelm Johannes von Zahn (born July 22, 1871 in Dresden , † October 8, 1946 in Jena ) was a German geographer.

Life

Gustav von Zahn was born the son of the bookseller and art dealer Robert von Zahn (* 1840) and his wife Elisabeth Foerderreuther (* 1845), who was married in 1870. After attending primary school in Dresden, he became a pupil of the Holy Cross grammar school in Dresden at Easter 1881 and passed his Abitur there at Easter 1891. He entered the military as an avantageur with the 3rd Infantry Regiment No. 102 in Zittau . On July 24, 1892 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1899 to first lieutenant, until he entered civilian life on January 16, 1900 as a reserve officer. At Easter 1900 he began studying geography and meteorology at the University of Berlin . Here were Wilhelm von Bezold , Wilhelm von Branca , Kurt Breysig , Hans Delbrück , Erich von Drygalski , Konrad Kretschmer , Wilhelm Meinardus , August Meitzen , Siegfried Passarge , Friedrich Paulsen , Ferdinand von Richthofen , Gustav von Schmoller , Max Sering , Felix Wahnschaffe and Alfred Vierkandt his teachers.

At Easter 1902 he moved to the University of Bern for a semester and studied with Armin Baltzer and Eduard Brückner . Returning to Berlin in 1902, he passed his doctoral examination on February 22, 1906, defending his thesis "The position of Armenia in the mountainous structure of the Middle East". After traveling through the USA and Mexico, he worked as a lecturer in Berlin before traveling to Brittany and southern England. He completed his habilitation in November 1909 at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . After another lecturer at the University of Jena and in 1910 at the University of Munich , he received an extraordinary professorship for geography and meteorology in Jena in October 1911. In the First World War he was a captain.

In 1920 von Zahn became a full professor of geography in Jena. Here he worked as director of the Geographical Institute until 1938, was rector of the Salana in 1929/30 and retired in November 1936.

In addition, as chairman of the Academic Committee for Physical Exercise, von Zahn was one of the main sponsors of academic sport and advocated compulsory sport in studies.
