Héctor Rubén Aguer (born May 24, 1943 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is retired Archbishop of La Plata .

Life

Héctor Rubén Aguer studied philosophy and humanities at the Diocesan Seminary in Buenos Aires (1964–1968), Hebrew in the Department of Biblical Studies at the Instituto de Cultura Religiosa Superior (1965–1967) and theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina ) (1968-1972). He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires on November 25, 1972 . After pastoral work, he was professor of moral theology at the Catholic University of Argentina from 1979 to 1992 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Lamdia and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires in 1992 . The episcopal ordination received his Antonio Cardinal Quarracino , archbishop of Buenos Aires, on April 4, 1992; Co- consecrators were Horacio Alberto Bózzoli , Archbishop of Tucumán , and José Manuel Lorenzo , Bishop of San Miguel . As a motto he chose Silenti Opere ("through quiet doing").

On June 26, 1998, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of La Plata . With the resignation of Carlos Walter Galán Barry on June 12, 2000, he followed this as Archbishop of La Plata.

He was a member of the Commission for Catechesis and President of the Commission for Catholic Education in the Argentine Bishops' Conference . On behalf of the Holy See , he was director of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America , a member of the Pontifical Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church and a member of the International Council for Catechesis .

In 1994, Héctor Rubén Aguer was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and Grand Prior of the Argentine Lieutenancy by the Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Caprio .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on June 2, 2018.
