Hanspeter Achmed Schmiede , also Hulusi Achmed Schmiede (born December 7, 1935 in Berlin ; † October 10, 2010 ) was a translator of Azerbaijani and Turkish literature . He has also been involved as a convert to Islam in Muslim communities in Germany (especially in Munich and Berlin) since the 1950s .

Live and act

Schmiede converted to Islam in 1957. In 1958 he co-founded the conservative religious journal al-Islam (an article by Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi appeared in the second issue ), which he oversaw for years. In the 1960s he was an important member of the Munich Mosque Construction Commission (forerunner of the Islamic Community in southern Germany ). At their general assembly on March 25, 1962, under the leadership of Said Ramadan , he was elected secretary. On April 13, 1966, Schmiede, who was also involved in the Islamic Center in Munich at the time , was one of the founding members of the “Muslim Community”, the first Turkish association in Munich, which had the first place of prayer in a tenement house near the BMW plant set up for Muslim guest workers . In mid-February 1978, Schmiede left the Islamic Community in southern Germany after a meeting of the General Assembly.

Schmiede was a member of the Karl May Society . He wrote several articles on Turkish or Islamic topics in Karl May's work (already in the first edition of the communications of the Karl May Society from September 1969 there is one from Schmiede, who at the time was a member of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey and lived in Sinzig ) and even published a poem May ( Greetings to us ... ) in the book he translated, Small Textbook of Islam .

The collection of Azerbaijani fairy tales The Petrified City (1975), which the blacksmith, then living in Berlin, translated for the series Fairy Tales of the Peoples of the Soviet Union published in the GDR , was, according to him, the first book to be translated directly from Azerbaijani into German in over a hundred years .

Schmiede was an employee of DİTİB . For this he also translated numerous Islamic writings into German.

At the end of 1987 Schmiede became a member of the Association for the History of Berlin , for whose newsletter he wrote an article about the Ottoman ambassador Aziz Ali Efendi , who was buried in the Turkish cemetery in Berlin in 1798 .

For his translation of Dede Korkut's book - The National Epic of the Oghuz , Schmiede was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1997 by the Baku State University . In addition, the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan appointed him senior research fellow in the local text research department and entrusted him with the complete re-evaluation and preparation of a text-critical edition of the Dresden manuscript.

In the last years of his life, Schmiede translated the travel reports of various Muslim seafarers of the 16th century, such as Piri Reis and Barbarossa's colleague Muradi, which he published himself in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler .

Schmiede had two sons. He died on October 10, 2010 and is buried in Cologne's Westfriedhof .
