HR 7722 (also 5 G. Capricorni or Gliese 785 ) is a yellowish-orange main sequence star of the spectral class K in the constellation Capricorn . At a distance of just over 29 light years , it still belongs to the stellar neighborhood of the sun . Its apparent brightness is sufficient enough to be seen with the naked eye. HR 7722 is believed to be a variable star , but this is unconfirmed. The star has a planetary system with two known exoplanets .

properties

HR 7722 has around 78% of the solar mass and, depending on the estimation method, 79% to 85% of the solar radius . It is older than the Sun, with age estimates ranging from 7.5 to 8.9 billion years. The proportions of elements other than hydrogen or helium and thus the metallicity are comparable to the sun.

The components of space velocity for the star are U = −69, V = −13 and W = −14 km / s. It orbits the galactic center with an eccentricity of 0.18 at a distance of 8.1 kiloparsecs .

Planetary system

A planet about the mass of Neptune was discovered in 2010 with the help of the HIRES instrument at the Keck Observatory . A second planet in the system was found in 2011 with the Échelle spectrograph HARPS of the European Southern Observatory and its discovery was published together with that of HD 85512 b and the planets of 82 G. Eridani . The determination of the mass for the second planet is uncertain because of the incomplete coverage of the orbit by the measurements. Both planets could resemble Neptune in composition. They orbit the star along the inner and outer boundaries of the habitable zone .
