From the following season 1984/85 the clubs from Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Berlin played in the north group and the clubs from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in the south group / Saar. In addition, the three Berlin clubs moved from south to north and the four NRW clubs from north to south. For the southern group, two combined relegation and promotion rounds (south and west) were played, in which the worst-placed south and west club participated. In the promotion round for the northern group, however, there were two promotion places.
