The Vienna Central Cemetery Station is a place of business in the 11th  district of Vienna Simmering . To the east of the stop is the eponymous Vienna Central Cemetery , to the west of the platform is the Wien-Kledering central shunting yard .

history

The Zentralfriedhof station went into operation together with the Aspangbahn ( Vienna Aspangbahnhof  - Zentralfriedhof - Maria Lanzendorf - Felixdorf ) on August 7, 1881. The line between Vienna Aspangbahnhof and Central Cemetery was double-tracked, the rest of the line to Sollenau Aspangbahnhof was single-track. During the construction of the Aspang Railway , a wing section was planned from the Zentralfriedhof station to the neighboring Klein Schwechat station , which was opened on December 6th of the same year and established the connection to the Donauländebahn .

The Vienna-Aspang Railway Company (EWA) was not interested in transporting corpses to the central cemetery, but a branch to the cemetery area was originally planned. The operation of the central cemetery station was good business for the EWA, especially around Allerheiligen . On November 1, 1881, 32 separate passenger trains stopped at the central cemetery and traveled the main customs office to the central cemetery. At first, the trains were allowed a maximum speed of 25 km / h (at night: 22 km / h), it was not until 1882 that the maximum speed was increased to 55 km / h. In addition to the EWA trains, eight Elisabeth-Bahn trains stopped at the Zentralfriedhof station every day and the Orient Express also had a direct connection to the Zentralfriedhof. The Southern Railway also ran trains to the Central Cemetery on All Saints' Day. The EWA alone was able to transport 37,000 people on 112 EWA trains on November 1, 1902, due to the needs of visitors to the cemetery. However, due to the electrification of the tram and its expansion to Schwechat, the EWA lost market share and had to temporarily stop operations at the central cemetery.

With the closure of the Vienna city route of the Pressburger Bahn on April 3, 1945, the trains on this route between Vienna Main Customs Office and Klein Schwechat were led via the Aspang Railway to Klein Schwechat from July 26, 1945.

The direct continuation of the Aspangbahn from the central cemetery to Maria Lanzendorf was shut down on May 29, 1979 in order to create construction space for the central shunting yard. Trains in the direction of Felixdorf and Wiener Neustadt have been running on the Ostbahn ever since . With the partial commissioning of the central shunting yard in Vienna in September 1983, the connecting track from the Vienna Central Cemetery station was also put into operation, making the Vienna Central Cemetery station a branch station again.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the decision was made to connect Vienna-Schwechat Airport to the center of Vienna with a powerful double-track railway line. For this purpose, a realignment was planned in the area of the central cemetery. The original route along the cemetery was abandoned in favor of a route that extended further south. The construction work began on June 30, 2001 with the closure of the line. Initially, the plans provided for the permanent closure of the Zentralfriedhof station. Later, the ÖBB planned to set up a demand breakpoint that should be served on special occasions, such as All Saints 'Day or All Souls ' Day . With its reopening on December 15, 2002, it remained as a regular stop.
