After a change of direction of 90 ° to the north, he crosses the Hammergrabensiedlung , a residential area of Cottbus, and then passes Merzdorf . About 700 meters after crossing under a road bridge west of Merzdorf, the Hammergraben originally split after it had taken up the water from the Tranitz river shortly before . Not far from here, the old course turned again to the east, in order to finally supply the Lakoma pond landscape with water. After a military he takes today by the devastation on the part of the Cottbus-Nord , an abrupt end.

The new Hammergraben makes a slight left turn at the same point in order to finally flow parallel to the B 169 on the west side of the former village of Lakoma . Here the Hammergraben has more of the appearance of a canal and then flows back into the original Hammergraben course after a good four kilometers at Maus . The Peitz pond landscape traversed and supplied with water, the trench meets the southern edge of Peitz and there turn towards west. In this bend there is an island surrounded by water and a branch canal begins towards the east to the Jänschwalde power station . In the further course of the main trench, it passes the Laßzinswiesen and the village of Maiberg , only to meet the Malxe about five kilometers further west of the village . Both bodies of water unite there to form the Great River .

The Hammergraben is a listed building from the former village of Lakoma to the confluence with the Malxe near Fehrow .
