Hana Usui

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hana Usui ( Japanese笛 吹 花, Usui Hana , born April 17, 1974 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese artist.

Life

Hana Usui studied art history at Waseda University in Tokyo and learned calligraphy from Japanese masters for about twenty years . In 1999 she left the “way of writing” , she completely broke away from the characters and since then has devoted herself to the fine arts. She uses white and black oil paint for her abstract drawings. The Indian ink is now used exclusively for the background design of her compositions on paper. From 2000 she worked mainly in Berlin. She has lived and worked in Vienna and Bolzano since 2011 .

“Hana Usui broke away from her starting point in Japanese calligraphy, without completely giving up its intellectual and formal foundations, in order to find a free line formation that was extraordinarily varied despite its reduction. This can lead to stronger concentrations, extreme scarcity, graphic clarity or linear rhythmic play up to striking gestural expression. This includes the relationship between graphic form and free space and the tension it creates. A level of meaning is never completely given up, symbolic and indicative ideas resonate in different ways, but they always remain unobtrusive. In addition, the use of oil paint leads to an intensification of the graphic image, just as the brush wash on a second sheet underlaid with the drawing increases the spatial and painterly richness. This variety of drawing possibilities and the openness written in all sheets are entirely in the service of the stylistic unity of the graphic work. "
