William Henry "Hank" Green (born May 5, 1980 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American video blogger , entrepreneur, musician, podcaster and author.

Life

Hank Green was born in Birmingham, Alabama , but his family moved early to Orlando, Florida , where he grew up. After graduating from Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida , he earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg and a master's degree in environmental science from the University of Montana in Missoula , where he currently lives with his wife Katherine Green. They married in September 2006 and their son Orin Green was born at the end of October 2016.

Together with his brother, the youth author John Green , he has been running the YouTube channel Vlogbrothers since January 2007 . The project started on January 1st, 2007 under the name Brotherhood 2.0 . The Green brothers wanted to try to communicate using only daily video messages for a year. The number of viewers increased over the course of the year. By September 4, 2015, they had uploaded 1,395 videos on this channel. With over 2.6 million subscribers, they are among the most successful vlogs ( video blogs ) and the 400 most popular channels on YouTube. Your videos have been viewed more than 550 million times and some have over 16 million clicks.

At the end of 2007, the first Project for Awesome took place, in which fans upload videos about non-profit organizations in a short period of time in order to attract the attention of YouTube visitors. Since then, this project has taken place annually and is supported by YouTube. In 2012 they toured 17 American cities on the occasion of the publication of John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars , most of the stations were sold out.

Since 2012, Hank and John Green have also been producing weekly videos for the Crash Course channel, which was initially funded by Google . Hank Green presents various series of classes on chemistry, US government and politics, astronomy, economics, anatomy and physiology, intellectual property, great history, psychology, literature, world history, ecology and US history. Another one on biology has already been completed. The channel has (as of August 2015) 3.2 million subscribers and each new video generates around 60,000 to 260,000 views. On the SciShow channel , which was launched at the same time and also supported by Google, Green also provides entertaining information on current scientific topics. This channel has (as of March 2018) 4.8 million subscribers. There are now spin-offs for children, Crash Course Kids and SciShow Kids from both channels .

Green is also the initiator and organizer of VidCon , the world's largest YouTube conference with over 2500 participants (2011), which has been held annually since 2010. After two years in the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles , the 2012 conference moved to Anaheim in the local convention center to meet the increasing number of participants to take into account.

From 2005 on, Green ran the online blog ecogeek.org , which he ran full-time for a while. EcoGeek was one of the largest blogs for environmental topics and technology; it was reported by Time magazine . Green subsequently wrote for the New York Times and Scientific American magazine, among others . Green continues to run EcoGeek, but is no longer a writer.

Hank Green's debut novel An Absolutely Remarkable Thing was published on September 25, 2018. It is about a young woman who becomes an internet sensation through a discovery. The novel made it onto the New York Times bestseller list. The German first edition in the translation by Katarina Ganslandt was published in 2019 under the title A really amazing thing by bold , an imprint of the dtv publishing company .

The sequel to the two-part series was released on July 7, 2020 under the title A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor and was # 4 on the New York Times bestseller list on July 16. A German translation is still pending.

Green has also produced or is involved in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries , The Brain Scoop , Animal Wonders , SciShow Space , Cereal Time , How to Adult , Healthcare Triage and Sexplanations .

During the Brotherhood 2.0 project in 2007, Green accepted the challenge of doing a biweekly self-written song (known as Song Wednesdays ) and has since been releasing his own songs, though not as often. His first successful song and also his breakthrough is Accio Deathly Hallows , which was on YouTubes homepage before the original publication of the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (original title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ) on July 21, 2007 and was more than 1 , Has been viewed 8 million times. Since then, Hank Green has released a Harry Potter themed song on the same date each year. With these and other songs, Hank Green made a name for himself in the wizard rock scene and is now a fixture there. He appeared several times at LeakyCon (now GeekyCon ), the largest Harry Potter fair in the world.

Hank Green's first studio album, So Jokes , was released in 2008 and reached number 22 on Billboard's Top 25 revenue generating albums online . He later released the albums I'm So Bad at This: Live! (2009), This Machine Pwns n00bs (2009) and Ellen Hardcastle (2011). Together with his band Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers , Green released Incongruent on May 17, 2014 .

In 2008 Green founded the music label DFTBA Records together with Alan Lastufka . It focuses on numerous artists and bands who have become known through the video platform YouTube, for example Alex Day , Charlie McDonnell , Chameleon Circuit , Dave Days and Rhett & Link are under contract. DFTBA is an acronym and stands for Don't Forget to Be Awesome . Green is also active as a musician himself and sells his studio albums there. The label's goal is to be a distribution opportunity for YouTube artists and to ensure that their music reaches the largest possible audience, explained Lastufka in a video on the subject. In addition to music albums, the official website also sells merchandise such as t-shirts, posters and other accessories. On June 19, 2014, Lastufka announced that he had sold all of his stake in the company and that he had resigned as president to pursue other projects.
