biography
Hanna von Hoerner was born in Görlitz in 1942 as the daughter of the German astrophysicist Sebastian von Hoerner (1919–2003) and Lisa Müller (1913–2002). The father was the son of the writer and painter Herbert von Hoerner (1884–1946) and the writer Susanne von Hoerner-Heintze (1890–1978). The mother was the daughter of the teacher and businessman Fritz Müller and Frieda Lange.
She was already fascinated by electronics as a child . She built her first radio at the age of six . When Hanna von Hoerner was 20 years old, the family emigrated to the USA because of her father's employment at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory . There she worked on what was then the largest radio telescope in Green Banks , West Virginia . In 1965 she returned to Germany to begin studying experimental physics in Heidelberg. In 1971, while still a doctoral student , she and a fellow student founded the company von Hoerner & Sulger, which specializes in the manufacture of instruments for analyzing cometary dust . In 1974 she received her PhD in physics . As in her diploma thesis, the topic of her work was the first space experiment - exploring the ionosphere with rockets.
The company she founded, for which she developed scientific instruments and headed it as managing director for decades, has, in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the dust analyzers for the investigation of Halley's comet for the space probes Vega 1 + 2 , Giotto , Stardust , Cassini , CONTOUR and Rosetta .
On April 25th, 2009 Hanna von Hoerner was awarded the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg , because "she knows how to get people excited about space technology and is a role model, especially for girls". On June 12, 2013, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , for promoting space travel and the common good of the country. The Federal Cross of Merit was presented by the Minister of Finance and Economics of the State of Baden-Württemberg , Nils Schmid , who described her as an "important ambassador for Baden-Württemberg as a technology location". The company as "David among the space travel Goliaths" is a world market leader for instruments for the analysis of cometary dust and has the best reputation.
Hanna von Hoerner last lived in Oftersheim , Baden-Württemberg and worked two to three times a week in the afternoons in the company she founded, which is run by two managing directors. She also lived in her home in Provence . Hoerner & Sulger's company is located in Schwetzingen .
Media coverage and memberships
In 2004 she was seen in a commercial for the state of Baden-Württemberg . In 2009 she was a conversation partner in Frank Elstner's talk show People of the Week . In autumn 2009, she performed at the Physics Highlights event in Gürzenich, Cologne , and presented the laboratory model of the planned European Mars rover . She worked on the board of trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research . She was also a member of the Space Forum in the Federal Association of the German Aerospace Industry (BDLI) and a member of the Space Program Commission at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
