Hanno Helbling
Hanno Helbling (born August 18, 1930 in Zuoz ; † February 9, 2005 in Rome ) was a Swiss writer , translator and feature editor .
Life
Hanno Helbling was born in Zuoz in the Engadin, his father was the Germanist Carl Helbling (1897–1966). The son grew up in Zurich and attended schools and university there . In 1953 he obtained his doctorate in history , German literature and comparative literary history . Further studies in Naples , Munich and Rome followed by 1956 . In 1958 he became the features editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) , and from 1973 to 1992 he headed the feature section. He lived in Rome from 1994 until his death. His successor in the NZZ was Martin Meyer . Since 1981 he was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .
In addition to his professional activity, Hanno Helbling wrote several books on medieval intellectual history and church topics, as well as reports on the Second Vatican Council in the NZZ . In addition, he has translated literary texts from French , Italian and English , especially works by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz .
He was the recipient of the Prix lémanique de la traduction literary prize .
Positions
Helbling was a critic of the declaration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith "The Primacy of the Successor of Peter in the Mystery of the Church" from 1998, the "Instrumentum Laboris" for the European Synod of Bishops in 1999 and the Declaration Dominus Iesus from 2000. He showed great interest in reforming the papacy.
Helbling had sympathy for the Catholic theologian Herbert Haag , whose book What Matters. Did Jesus want a two-tier church? (1997) he defended against the criticism of the Basel bishop Kurt Koch .
In 2004 he defended against the criticism of Joseph Ratzinger the renunciation of the reference to God in the preamble of the EU constitution.
