history

Memorial for the forced laborers of the VARTA accumulator factory

The name of the district comes from the Marienwerder monastery founded in 1196. In 1766 the Hinübersche garden was laid out. Marienwerder was incorporated into Hanover in 1928 together with Herrenhausen and Leinhausen . During the Second World War, a branch of the Neuengamme concentration camp , the Accumulators Factory, was located near the former accumulator factory (later VARTA ) . On the site of the former concentration camp at the junction of Garbsener Landstrasse / Hollerithallee there is a sculpture by Hans-Jürgen Breuste and a memorial plaque as a warning .

Also after the Second World War, the Hanoverian city planner Eberhard Kulenkampff was temporarily responsible for Marienwerder under city planning officer Rudolf Hillebrecht .

Marienwerder includes an industrial belt along the Mittelland Canal and several residential areas. Science park and industrial area border on the industrial area of Stöcken . The A2 motorway and federal highway 6 form the border to the Stöcken district.

Residential areas

The residential area, which is embedded in Klosterforst, Hinüberschen Garten and Leineaue, consists of the Alter Gutshof residential development, listed houses in the Gartenhofsiedlung from the 1960s and apartment buildings in the immediate vicinity of the Havelse district of Garbsen. The residential area has a day-care center, a listed primary school and local supply in the Große Pranke district center. Due to the labyrinthine pedestrian zone between the garden courtyard houses, it is suitable for families with children and the multi-storey apartment building with small apartments for students.

The small part of the settlement on the street "Im Spitzen Ort" consists of detached single-family houses that form a unit with the street "Im Spitzen Ort" in the Havelse district of the city of Garbsen. The small part of the settlement "Auf dem Bockenberge" consists of detached houses along the Garbsener Landstrasse, which forms a unit with the science park.

The residential area north of the Mittelland Canal, bounded by the city limits and the industrial belt, consists of apartment buildings in connection with the Garbsen district of Auf der Horst . The residential area is close to the production technology center of the University of Hanover in Garbsen.

Leineaue

This floodplain stretches from the Schweinberg, located to the west next to the Hinüberschen Garten, to the Seelze Citizens Park on the opposite bank in a south-westerly direction. It is characterized by agriculturally used green areas, some of which are located within the floodplain of the Leine . When the line level is increased, shallow water areas form. In 1852 a dam was built at a large distance from the river. The name Marienwerder refers to a river Werder that no longer exists today . The line used to have another bed there; In the Leineaue there is an Altleinearm in the flood plain.

The Altleinearm serves as a breeding ground for the marsh warbler , which in turn serves as hosts for the cuckoo . Here were ears larks , Lapland bunting , snow buntings , corn buntings , yellowhammers , pheasants , bean geese , teals , mute swans and whooper swans sighted.

Science and Technology Park

In October 2012, the Science and Technology Park (WTH) was opened as a landscape park. Lingering opportunities and a network of paths were created. The history of the square is told on a board at the entrance from Garbsener Landstrasse. In 2011 and 2012, soil remediation was carried out around the Roßbruchgraben on the area of the park . This area was marked by soil pollution from the earlier VARTA accumulator factory. The erosion resulted in elevations and depressions, some of which were integrated into the overall appearance of the park. Connections were made to the Hinüberer Garten recreation area and to the Leineaue .

traffic

Marienwerder is served by line 4 of the Hanover city railway and several bus routes. The light rail connects Marienwerder with the center of Hanover and Garbsen. The buses lead to the surrounding Garbsen districts and to Stöcken.
