Hans-Georg Ernst

Hans-Georg Ernst (born February 18, 1921 in Celle ; † August 25, 2000 ) was a German lieutenant general of the National People's Army (NVA) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1961 to 1974 he was chief of the Leipzig military district .

Life

Ernst, the son of a weaver , learned after the elementary school the profession of pastry chef . In 1938 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and drafted into the German Wehrmacht that same year . He fought in the rank of Oberwachtmeister of the artillery until 1945 in World War II and was wounded three times. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the Soviets on Czechoslovak territory .

In May 1945 Ernst returned to Germany in the Soviet zone of occupation and became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). In the same year he moved to Erfurt and on May 25, 1945 became a member of the German People's Police (DVP). He began his service as a sergeant and cavalry officer at the local police headquarters. In April 1946 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1946 to 1948 Ernst was employed as a clerk at the Weimar State Police Department with the rank of VP commissioner (lieutenant) . From 1948 to 1949 he was head of the People's Police (VP) - standby in Ilmenau and from 1949 to 1950 of the VP standby in Mühlhausen / Thuringia . In 1950 he was promoted to VP Oberrat (major). In 1951/52 he was head of the VP readiness in Kochstedt . When he joined the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP) in 1952, he was promoted to colonel . From 1952 to 1953 he completed a special course for executives in the Soviet Union and was then commander of the CIP readiness in Potsdam until October 1955 . From 1955 to 1957 Ernst was a guest auditor at the Higher Military Academy "KJ Voroshilov" of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR in Moscow and was taken over into the NVA founded in 1956 during this time.

From January 1958 to August 1961 he was in command of the 4th Mot.-Rifle Division in Erfurt (successor to Martin Günther). On March 1, 1961, he was appointed major general and from August to October 1961 he was the first deputy to the head of the Leipzig military district (successor to Hermann Vogt ). From November 1, 1961 to November 30, 1973 he was head of the Leipzig military district (successor to Artur Kunath ) and at the same time from 1961 to 1972 a member of the College of the Ministry of National Defense . On October 3, 1968, he was promoted to lieutenant general by the chairman of the GDR's National Defense Council , Walter Ulbricht . From 1973 to 1976 he was commander of the officers' college of the land forces "Ernst Thälmann" in Löbau . He was released from military service on February 15, 1977.

Ernst was a candidate for the Central Committee (ZK) of the SED from 1963 to 1967 and, from March 1979, chairman of the newly formed committee for military combat sports at the Society for Sport and Technology (GST).
