Hans-Georg Wagner (born November 22, 1962 in Havelberg ) is a German artist , sculptor and designer .

Life

Hans-Georg Wagner lives and works in Cottbus . From 1979 to 1981 he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter there. From 1983 to 1986 he studied wood design at the technical school for applied arts in Schneeberg , today part of the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau , under the mentorship of the sculptor and designer Hans Brockhage and the artist Karl Heinz Jakob . After graduating in 1986, he moved into his studio in Cottbus, which is still the center of his work today.

In 1994 Wagner built his first wooden canoe according to the original blueprints of the birch bark canoes of North American natives. In 1997, at a symposium, he met Werner Stötzer and Sylvia Hagen , whose friendship and work had a lasting impact on his work. Since 2005 Wagner has also been active as a curator and exhibits works by artist colleagues in the Atelier Galerie Wagner, especially from the field of sculpture.

Create

Hans-Georg Wagner's work is centered around the material wood . Topics are people, freedom and the attempt to get an idea of the world. In addition to humanistic and social motives, he also addresses political issues and uses religious motifs.

Another aspect of the focus on people is reflected in his furniture design. He sees the task of design in opening up spaces and making them usable for people. The boat building has also led him to the Canadian style , on the basis of which he choreographed so-called canoe ballets and staged both solo and in group constellations to music. This practice also overlaps with his work as an organizer and curator.

art

sculpture

Wagner made small sculptures from wood splinters and wax and had them later cast in bronze . Medium-sized to larger-than-life sculptures are created from tree trunks or branches. According to his own statement, Hans-Georg Wagner brings out what is already in the wood. For him a tree is life experience brought into shape. Wagner's sculptures are usually created by splitting a tree trunk. To do this, he opens the tree trunk and drives riving knife into the fiber until the trunk splits lengthways. He then removes the bark and removes any areas affected by rot or fungus. In the resulting figure he discovers forms and movements, whose human form he then works out. There are also bronze versions of the larger sculptures .

During this process, he often comes across inclusions, e.g. Kalashnikow projectiles or shrapnel from the Second World War , fence material, overgrown branches and more. These finds and the possibility to bring these finds into a temporal dimension by counting the annual rings of a tree add an archaeological component to the sculpture work.

relief

Wagner's reliefs also show human motifs or are abstract structural reliefs, which he either leaves in their natural colors or colors. In a special work process, similar to the relief printing process, he paints the surfaces in color and makes hand rubs on shōji paper and pulls them onto shōji frames, whereby intermediate positions of the reliefs are recorded, which have an artistic intrinsic value.

Art print, painting & graphics

Besides the above mentioned Handabreibungen Wagner practiced all other forms of visual arts such as etchings , prints, graphics, drawings and paintings.

Wagner's wood design is a mixture of the modern, industrial Bauhaus design with handcraft influences from the German craft tradition and elements from Japanese craftsmanship. His furniture design includes cabinets, shelves, chairs, tables, shōji, screens , chests and beds. His interior design includes stairs, mezzanine floors, stage elements and more. Wagner also designs objects for the outdoor space, such as information signs, mobile mounts and travel kitchens.

canoe

Frame Wagner canoes are made from the Wood and Canvas of the Tetes de Boul 21/2 Fathom type - canoes from the St. Maurice River in Canada . Instead of the traditional birch bark, Wagner uses birch plywood , which greatly improves the robustness of the hull. Experienced Canadian athletes rate the sailing characteristics of the boats as consistently positive.

Canoe ballet

Wagner dominated the paddling technique of Canadian Style and American Freestyle Paddlings to maneuver the boats allow precisely and with little effort. Together with his wife and members of the European canoe community, he stages choreographies to music on the water - this includes the world premiere of the world's first canoe ballet to a live orchestra at the reopening of the natural pyramid (tumulus) in Branitzer Park .

Events

In the series of events for sculpture at the film festival , Wagner usually exhibits artists in his studio gallery each year during the Cottbus film festival . So far, these have included Sonja Eschefeld , Sylvia Hagen, Berndt Wilde , Steffen Mertens and others.

Another recurring event is the art Christmas market with an annually changing theme.

In addition, Wagner regularly curates personal exhibitions in the gallery. The artists exhibited so far include B. Joachim Böttcher , Anna Franziska Schwarzbach and others.
