Hans-Joachim Körner (born September 4, 1934 in Dresden ; † September 7, 2003 in Munich ) was a German physicist .

Scientific career

Hans-Joachim Körner graduated from high school in Hamburg in 1953. He studied physics at the University of Hamburg and did his doctorate in 1963 with his teacher Willibald Jentschke with measurements of magnetic moments of excited nuclear states, a pioneering work. As head of the nuclear spectroscopy group, he completed his habilitation in 1965 with a thesis on magnetic moments of excited nuclei. He came to the Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich as head of department in 1966 and became internationally known for the application of the Mössbauer effect to nuclear physics problems and nuclear spectroscopic studies. After research stays at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley , at the MPI for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg and Argonne National Laboratory with a variety of nuclear structure investigations and a focus on heavy ions induced reactions, he was appointed full professor of experimental physics at the Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich in 1972 .

From 1972, Hans-Joachim Körner's scientific activities focused on the study of heavy ion reactions at the tandem accelerator of the accelerator laboratory of the LMU and TUM (today Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium), the UNILAC of the GSI Darmstadt and various guest stays at the Argonne National Laboratory and the Brookhaven National Laboratory , at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at their accelerator facilities. Connected with the experimental investigations of various nuclear reaction mechanisms, especially the many-particle transfer reactions, were the development of apparatus for detection methods for particles and gamma radiation as well as kinematic coincidence techniques.

From 1984, the beginning of his colleague Paul Kienle's leave of absence at the GSI, he took over the sole management of the sub-institute E12 until shortly before his retirement in 2002. During this time, E12 started an extensive and very successful experimentation program at the GSI, from 1990 onwards the new accelerator facility SIS-ESR , at the HASYLAB at DESY , at ISOLDE at CERN and at the cyclotron in Indiana, USA. At the Munich accelerator laboratory, new application-relevant methods were developed, such as accelerator mass spectroscopy , heavy ion-pumped lasers and analysis with ion beams , which led to highly interesting applications and made the accelerator laboratory known worldwide as a unique center for interdisciplinary research with ion beams.

Hans-Joachim Körner was Dean of the Faculty of Physics and a member of the TUM Senate (1980–82). He headed the Institute for Nuclear and Nuclear Solid State Physics (1974-76) and was director and deputy director of the accelerator laboratory for several periods. Körner was a member of many commissions of the university and its faculty, the commission for informatics of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the program committees of external accelerator centers, the advisory committees of the BMFT and the DFG , the award committees of the DPG as well as their expert committee leaders and the advisory board of the MPI for Plasma Physics (IPP ) .

Publications

Körner is the author of 157 publications in international scientific journals and of over 80 conference contributions as well as the textbook Wolfgang Zinth, Hans-Joachim Körner: Optics, Quantum Phenomena and Structure of Atoms . 3. Edition. Walter de Gruyter, 1997, ISBN 978-3-486-79244-7 ( table of contents on Google Books ).
