research

Haussig's publications deal primarily with the region around the Silk Road as well as the culture and history of the Byzantine Empire. His “Cultural History of Byzantium” (1959) in particular gained widespread circulation, appeared in several editions and was translated into English, French, Italian and Polish. His two-volume work on the history of Central Asia and the Silk Road in pre-Islamic and Islamic times up to the 13th century (1983/1988) is of scientific importance to this day due to the fact that it takes into account the various European, Islamic and Chinese sources as well as the archaeological findings.

In addition, Hans-Wilhelm Haussig was the editor of the extensive “ Dictionary of Mythology ”, which has been published by Klett-Cotta in Stuttgart since 1965 . The volumes on the myths of the ancient Orient (1965), pre-Christian Europe (1973), the Indian subcontinent (1984) and the Caucasian and Iranian peoples (1986) were published under his direction . Together with Edward Tryarski he researched the old Turkish Orkhon runes ; In collaboration with the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , he examined trade and ethnology in Eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages . He also made several contributions to the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde and the Handbuch der Orientalistik .

All in all, Haussig covered a broad spectrum of research fields, whereby his interest was not only in the characteristics of individual cultures but also in the mutual influences and relationships of the various societies. The ancient historian Manfred Clauss wrote in an obituary in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : “As a scientist, Hans Wilhelm Haussig was a wanderer between worlds and cultures. Sometimes there was something shimmering about his work, something that cross-border commuters sometimes have to offer. "
