Life

Hans Albrecht was enrolled at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg together with his brother Fritz Jakob von Anweil the Younger on October 11, 1521 . Through his marriage contract of 1532 with the Stürzel von Buchheim family, he came into the circle of the most respected noble families in Breisgau . In 1535 he became a citizen of Freiburg and in the same year he was elected to the city council. In 1536, Margrave Ernst von Baden-Durlach appointed him his councilor and governor in the Oberamt Rötteln, an office previously held by his older brother Fritz Jakob.

Johanna von Longueville tried again and again to enforce her claims to Rötteln and Sausenberg or to silver them in some way. So she got in contact with the city of Basel in order to sell her claims if necessary, since she assumed that this large trading city, as the immediate neighbor of the margraviate, would rather find ways and means to assert itself. Around 1538, Basel also considered this option. After diplomatic steps by the then Röttler Landvogts, Hans Albrecht von Anweil, the decision was taken not to do so, but at least the option was used as a means of pressure in the negotiations with the margraviate for rights in Klein-Hüningen and Riehen.

Due to a dispute between Christoph von Venningen and Margrave Ernst over rights in Königsbach , Hans Albrecht was detained for 45 weeks together with other councilors of the Margrave in 1539/40. Soon after his release, Hans Albrecht moved back to Freiburg and in November 1540 Johann Jakob von Rotberg was named as his successor in the office of Bailiff von Rötteln. Rotberg also became the guardian of Hans Albrecht's children after his wife died (before 1543).

In 1543 he was re-elected to the Freiburg City Council and mayor for the 1544/45 term of office. He then became mayor of the city in 1546 . For the term of office of 1547/48 he was re-elected as mayor and in 1548 again as mayor.

In 1549 he sold the Stürzelhof in Freiburg, which he owned from the estate of his first wife, to the imperial vice-chancellor Matthias von Held . As a result, there were protracted disputes between buyer and seller. Hans Albrecht was elected mayor for the third time in 1550. In 1553 he refused - like other peers - to participate in the city council, but finally accepted another election as mayor. At the end of the year, however, he resigned this office and shared the intention of leaving Freiburg. On January 8, 1554 he became a citizen of Basel and in 1555 his house in Freiburg was sold. Instead, he bought the Hiltelingen moated castle near Basel, but located in the Oberamt Rötteln. In 1565 he received this noble residence from the margrave as an inheritance.

In December 1556 he took up the post of bailiff in the Oberamt Rötteln again and became the successor to his then successor Johann Jakob von Rotberg. Margrave Ernst - his former employer - died in 1553 and his son Karl introduced the Reformation in his country in June 1556 (see History of the Reformation in Markgräflerland ).

Hans Albrecht suffered heavily from Podagra since 1564 , but he held office at least until May 1566 and died in 1568. He was buried in the Röttler church .
