Hans Ansgar Reinhold (born September 6, 1897 in Hamburg as Hans Reinhold; † January 26, 1968 in Pittsburgh ) was a German Roman Catholic priest .

Live and act

Reinhold studied in Freiburg and Innsbruck . He entered the Benedictine monastery Maria Laach in 1922 , but did not make an everlasting profession there, but left the monastery again. He was ordained a priest in Osnabrück in 1925 . He was then a chaplain in the St. Johann children's sanatorium (today Maria Meeresstern's specialist clinic ) in Niendorf on the Baltic Sea .

After the decision of the German Bishops' Conference to set up the seaman's mission (Apostolatus Maris) with Bishop Wilhelm Berning as president, he became the seaman's pastor of the first Catholic seaman's mission in Bremerhaven in 1929 . He visited large ports, founded a magazine and took part in international congresses of the Apostolatus Maris. In 1931 he became general secretary of the Apostulatus Maris. In 1933 he inaugurated the first Catholic seaman's home in Hamburg, Hafenstrasse 93. In 1934 Reinhold organized the third international AM congress in Hamburg. After the house was demolished because of the expansion of the Landungsbrücken in 1935 and the move to the Porter-Meyer house , Hopfenstrasse 34, the Gestapo targeted him .

After Hamburg, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein were banned from staying and speaking on April 26, 1935, he decided to flee to the USA via the Netherlands , England and Switzerland . The American episcopate was suspicious of the refugee from Germany and suspected him of being a Nazi spy , among other things because he had no church release papers ( Celebret ). At first he was banned from the pulpit. He was involved in the Catholic Worker movement Catholic Worker of Dorothy Day and has written articles in The Catholic Worker , studied theology and history at Columbia University and taught at the School of the Benedictine Abbey Portsmouth . In 1940 he went to Seattle as a seaman pastor . However, he lost this position as Enemy Alien after the USA entered the war, whereupon he was transferred to Yakima as a chaplain . In 1944 he received American citizenship.

Hans Ansgar Reinhold wrote numerous books on social and liturgical topics. With this, and with his long-standing column in the liturgical journal Orate Fratres , he is considered a co-founder of the liturgical movement in the USA. He was very committed to modern church building in the USA. The Saint John's University (Minnesota) in Collegeville (Minnesota) in 1951 awarded him its honorary doctorate . Reinhold retired in Pittsburgh in 1956.
