Hans Erich Kubach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Erich Kubach (born September 2, 1909 in Cologne , † May 26, 1999 in Speyer ) was a German art historian and monument conservator who was considered a leading expert on Romanesque and pre- Romanesque architecture in Germany. He was the curator of the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Preservation in Speyer.

biography

Kubach studied art history in Cologne , Bonn , Besançon and Paris. In 1933 he received his doctorate in Cologne from Rudolf Kömstedt with a dissertation on the Rhenish Triforian Churches of the Staufer period , and in 1942, again with Kömstedt, he completed his habilitation in Erlangen with the work The Lower Rhine-Maasland Art Space from the Ottonian to the Staufer Period: An Art Geographic Study .

After completing his studies, he initially worked in the inventory of art monuments. For the art monuments of the province of Mark Brandenburg he edited the volume of the district of Sorau and the city of Forst (1939) and the district of Teltow (1941); the planned volume Landkreis Oststernberg (today Powiat Sulęciński ) appeared due to the situation only in 1960. For Die Kunstdenkmäler der Rheinprovinz he was involved in the creation of the volume on the Landkreis Koblenz (1944). From 1954 to 1974 he was senior curator at the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Rhineland-Palatinate, and from 1962 to 1985 he was also honorary professor at Saarland University .

Hans Erich Kubach's main research interest was in Romanesque architecture, which he saw in its respective regional form in the European context, regardless of national restrictions. His preoccupation with the early Gothic architecture of France and its significant influence on the Rhenish late Romanesque inspired him to classify the development of French architecture between 1140 and 1190 as “late Romanesque of the Île-de-France ”. Together with Walter Haas , Kubach led the accompanying construction investigation during the restoration of the Speyer Cathedral (1957 to 1972), which led to a decisive reassessment of its building history. With his colleague at the Rhenish State Office for Monument Preservation Albert Verbeek , whom he knew from his student days, he published a four-volume inventory of the Romanesque churches in the Rhine-Maas area. Another interest was the phenomenon of the Romanesque hall church in its respective landscape characteristics in the different regions of Europe.

Appreciation

According to his obituary in the Berliner Zeitung , Kubach was "perhaps the last great among the academic preservationists"; his three-volume monograph on the Speyer Cathedral, which he worked on together with Water Haas, “became a founding monument of modern building research and revolutionized knowledge of medieval construction. Countless art historians and building archaeologists have followed this path. Kubach's art landscape studies, however, have so far only been insufficiently exhausted in their exemplary expressiveness. "
