Hans Karl Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (born February 18, 1867 in Würzburg , † September 25, 1942 in Völkershausen / Willmars municipality ) was a German politician and State Secretary in the Reich Economic Office of the German Empire .

Studies and professional career

He came from the Stein family to Nordheim and Ostheim . After studying law , he joined the Royal Bavarian Administration. In 1903 he moved to the Reich Office of the Interior as an unskilled worker . There he was promoted to the Secret Government Council and Lecturing Council in 1905 and to the Secret Upper Government Council in 1910.

On February 1, 1914, he was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry for Alsace-Lorraine . He then returned to the Reich Office of the Interior on November 19, 1915, where he was appointed Undersecretary of State in mid-1917, but this appointment was not handed over, but was put on record. Instead, on August 22, 1917, he became permanent representative of the Prussian State Ministry (government) in matters of domestic policy and administration to the Supreme Army Command (OHL) .

State Secretary in the Reich Economic Office

On November 20, 1917, he was appointed as the successor of Rudolf Schwander , who had only been acting provisionally since November 9, 1917, as State Secretary in the Reich Economic Office founded on October 23, 1917 . Georg von Hertling was Chancellor at the time .

Stein also held the office under Hertling's successor as Reich Chancellor, Prince Max von Baden , until November 8, 1918. At the same time he was appointed real privy councilor. On November 26, 1917, he was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Reichsbank . In addition, from 1917 to 1918 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Central Purchasing Society (ZEG), which had emerged in 1915 from what was known as Reich Purchasing . From January 23 to February 1, 1918 he was also Reich Commissioner for the Transitional Economy.

August Müller succeeded him as State Secretary on November 14, 1918 .

After the First World War he retired from political life and from 1919 was solely the administrator of the von Stein family's private assets.
