Hans Georg Christian Meyer was born in 1849 as the son of a carpenter working in Berlin. He attended the grammar school to the gray monastery , where he passed his Abitur in 1869. At the universities of Heidelberg, Berlin, Leipzig and Munich he attended philosophical, historical, geographical, cultural and historical lectures before 1872 , the university in Halle (Saale) visited, where he received his doctorate in 1874 for his dissertation on Leibniz and Baumgarten as the founder of German aesthetics .

In 1876 Meyer completed his probationary year and passed the teaching examination. From the following year 1877 he began with the title Dr. phil. as a senior teacher at the gray monastery grammar school.

From 1890 Meyer was one of the first summer visitors to the small town of Neuglobsow in the Mark Brandenburg , where he soon went on annual “singing trips” with the school choir of his high school. Most of the songs he sang himself, while the setting came from his friend, the school director Ludwig Bellermann .

In 1894 Meyer, who taught history in particular, was given the title of professor.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the deceased German Emperor Wilhelm I , who was elevated to "Wilhelm the Great" during the centenar celebrations in Berlin from March 21 to 23, 1897, Meyer composed the music for various voices by the composer Theodor Krause The song Wilhelm der Grosse was published by CA Challier & Co. in Berlin in March 1897 . Song of the Germans , beginning with the verse

"He came a hundred years ago
Who, at God's call , created a fatherland
with German heroes
..."

which was later spread in other school books.

In addition to his song poems, the school professor created stories and worked as a translator of Homer's writings .

One of Meyer's honors is the award of the Red Eagle Order, fourth class .

After his sudden death in Berlin, Hans-Georg Meyer was buried in accordance with his wishes in the Neuglobsow cemetery, where his tombstone with a relief plate has been preserved. It shows a mother handing her son a laurel wreath with the Latin inscription “Res severa verum gaudium” (“Serious thing is true joy”).
