Hans Peter Laubscher (archaeologist)

Hans Peter Laubscher (born August 22, 1936 in Baden-Baden , † February 12, 1999 in Munich ) was a German classical archaeologist .

After graduating from high school in Mannheim in 1955 , he began studying Classical Archeology with the minor subjects Ancient Oriental Philology and Ancient History at the University of Heidelberg , where he did his dissertation with Roland Hampe in 1961 - after switching to the Free University of Berlin and studying abroad in Rome Hellenistic temple cult images was promoted. In the same year, the work was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute .

After returning from the fellowship trip, Laubscher worked at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute from 1962 to 1966 . From 1966 to 1968 he was initially a research assistant at the University of Giessen . In this function, he moved in 1968 to the University of Hamburg , where he joined in 1973 with the work of the relief decoration of Galeriusbogens in Thessaloniki habilitated . In 1971 he was appointed to the Scientific Council, and in 1977 Laubscher became professor at the University of Hamburg. In the winter semester 1989/1990 he accepted a professorship at the University of Munich , where he worked until his death.

Hans Peter Laubscher's scientific interest was primarily in research into Hellenistic sculpture. His book Fishermen and Country People. Studies on Hellenistic Genre Sculpture (Mainz 1982) can be regarded as a groundbreaking work for the interpretation of Hellenistic genre representations. His second preferred field of research was the self-portrayal of the Roman emperors during the Tetrarchy (283 / 4–313 AD).
