Hans Silvester (2019)

Hans Silvester (born October 2, 1938 in Lörrach ) is a German photographer and environmental activist.

Life

Hans Silvester's career as a photographer began with his first camera, which his parents gave him for his 14th birthday. He combined his passion for photography with his interest in travel reports. After graduating in photography from the Freiburg industrial school in 1955, he traveled all over Europe, especially the Camargue . There, in 1960, his first success was his reportage with texts by Jean Giono . In 1962 he settled in Provence in the village of Lioux , from where he continues to travel the world: South America (for a report of a humanitarian nature), United States (where he stayed for six months), Central America, Japan, Portugal, Egypt, Tunisia, Hungary, Peru, Italy and Spain.

He joined the French photo agency Rapho in 1965 and opened the first issue of Geo magazine in 1977 with a report on a village in the French Basque Country . New Year's Eve is both a nature photographer on various subjects such as pigeons, horses in the Camargue, birds, cats and dogs from the Greek islands, as well as a photographer of old traditions such as pétanque, scarecrows, kites.

Silvester has been using his work since 1980 to campaign for environmental issues. He photographed all the natural parks in Europe, denounced the devastating effects of deforestation in the Amazon, published a report under the title la rivière assassinée in Geo on the Calavon River , which gained notoriety in France for its industrial pollution in Apt , and recorded the deforestation in North America in photographs Woods.

Recently, New Year's Eve has mainly been working on topics such as the photographic recording of the life of women in the desert and a photo reportage about the people of the Omo river valley in southern Ethiopia .
