Hans Ulrich Krafft , also Hans Ulrich Krafft von Dellmensingen (born March 25, 1550 in Ulm , † February 21, 1621 in Ulm), was a German businessman and traveler to the Orient.

Life

Krafft comes from one of the oldest patrician families in Ulm. Like his ancestor Ludwig Krafft , his father Hans Krafft (1499–1577) was also mayor of Ulm, patrician, councilor, chief judge and councilor. His grandparents were Wilhelm Krafft and Elisabeth, geb. Bitterlin. His mother, Magdalena (around 1527–64) was a daughter of Eberhard Krafft von Dellmensingen (around 1485–1532) and Elisabeth Roth von Reutti (from the Roth von Schreckenstein family ).

Hans Ulrich Krafft was destined to be a merchant and first worked from 1562 for the trading house of Hieronymus II. Imhof (who was married to Catharina Krafft for the fourth time) in Augsburg , who moved him to Lyon from 1565 to learn the French language and then for three years let go to Florence . Compatriots who came back from Alexandria made him want to get to know oriental countries. To this end, he entered the service of the Augsburg house of Melchior Manlich and relatives in the Comptoir Marseille in 1573 . In May 1573 he left to manage the factories in Tripoli and Aleppo with other employees of the house . The doctor and botanist Leonhard Rauwolf was added to him. They traveled through Switzerland and the Rhone Valley to Marseille and arrived in Tripoli by ship in September. Two stays in Cyprus gave him the opportunity to get to know the conditions there at the beginning of Turkish rule. When Melchior Manlich went bankrupt, Krafft was imprisoned in Turkish guilty custody in 1574–1577 at the request of the main creditor with two employees. On October 19, 1577 he returned to Marseille. It was not until December 1578 that he set out from Genoa , via Switzerland, on his way home. After he had recovered in the home, he was an accountant 1582-85 when former Mayor Hans Richter in Opava . From there he traveled continuously in eastern Central Europe. In 1587 he got the job of the Ulm nurse in Geislingen an der Steige . In the same year he married Susanna (* 1557), the daughter of the Ulm councilor and merchant Anton Schermar .

He wrote his memoirs, after the first beginnings in 1582, mainly 1614-16. He also expanded the art and rarities collection, the basis of which he had brought back from the Orient. In 1619 he retired and resigned his office to his son.
