Hans Werner Rothe (born April 25, 1906 in Erfurt ; † around 1985) was a German businessman, author, paleontologist and fossil collector .

Life

Hans Werner Rothe studied business administration at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences by 1934 and later worked as a business graduate in Erfurt, Frankfurt am Main and Bad Vilbel .

From around 1926 he collected fossils from the Thuringian Triassic and is known in palaeontology for his work on and first descriptions of ceratites from the Upper Muschelkalk in Thuringia. In the years after 1947, after being returned from the war relocation sites, he was involved in the allocation, redefinition and inventory of the collection of the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In 1951 he received from the State Secretariat for Higher Education in Berlin a research contract with financial support for fine stratigraphic investigations in the Upper Muschelkalk, the results of which he wrote after completing the processing and moving to Frankfurt am Main in 1953 with his work Die Ceratiten and the Ceratite Zones of the Upper Muschelkalk (Trias) published in the Thuringian Basin in 1955.

In honor of the Erfurt fossil collector August Poss Ecker he called 1937 the Triassic cephalopods Ceratites posseckeri Rothe in 1937 and after the teachers and paleontologist Hans Penndorf in 1955 cephalopods Ceratites penndorfi Rothe 1955. He later worked with the journalists, marketing managers and paleontologist Rudolf Mundlos together, the contributed numerous color photos to the publication Kleine Versteinerungskunde , which appeared in several editions for the first time in 1969 and later over the years .

He was a member of the Thuringian Geological Association and the Association of Friends of Mineralogy and Geology eV (VFMG eV), to whose publications he made some contributions. He continued to deal with the history of Thuringia and published a. a. some works on various castles and palaces in Thuringia. Many of his writings were published in part exclusively but also in addition by himself.

In 1960 Louis Paul Wunsch named the cephalopod Balatonites rothei Wunsch 1960 in his honor .

Hans Werner Rothe last lived in Bad Vilbel at 53 Kasseler Str. Some of the originals described by him (including Ceratites luzifer Rothe 1955) were most recently in the Otmar Kleindienst (1938-2015) collection in Kleinochsenfurt after parts of his collection were acquired .
