Harald Stein (born August 4, 1942 in Kiel ) is a German pathologist . The focus of his work was and is hematopathology, ie the pathology of malignant diseases of the blood-forming system. In 1973/74, together with Karl Lennert, he played a key role in the development of the Kiel classification of malignant lymphomas and later played a leading role in the formulation of the Revised European American Lymphoma (REAL) classification in 1994. He was also involved in the subsequent WHO classifications in 2001 and 2008. With these classifications, the lymphoma diseases were defined more precisely or their definitions were standardized so that, for example, it was possible for the first time to compare the results of lymphoma therapies in Europe and the USA.

Life

Stein completed his studies in medicine in Kiel and Innsbruck in 1968.

In 1968 he took part in the sailing regattas of the 1968 Summer Olympics in Acapulco and took 4th place.

In 1970 he received after his time as a medical assistant , the license to practice medicine . For his doctorate under Karl Lennert he received the faculty award in 1970. In 1976 he qualified as a professor in general and special pathology , in 1979 he became a specialist in pathology and in 1980 he was an adjunct professor at Kiel University . This was followed by a research stay at the John Radcliffe Hospital at the University of Oxford , before Stein became Head of Department and Managing Director of the Institute for Pathology at the Steglitz Clinic of the Free University of Berlin in 1984 (from 2004 the Benjamin Franklin campus of the Charité ). In 1991 he declined an offer to the chair of general and special pathology at the University of Düsseldorf and in 2001 a call to the office of Chairman of the Department of Hematopathology of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston . After his retirement in 2010, Stein took over the management of Pathodiagnostik Berlin and the HistoGene Company H&C .

Act

Stein is considered one of the pioneers of immunohistochemistry , with the help of which he was able to make significant contributions to the classification of various tumors, especially lymphomas. That the reticulo 1972 discovered stone sarcomas or not histiocytic tumors of macrophages derived, but from B cells originate. In 1983 he discovered the Ki-67 (“Ki” stands for Kiel) and in 1981 the cytokine receptor CD30 , with the help of which he identified the anaplastic large-cell lymphoma as a new tumor entity. Stein described the plasmoblastische lymphoma and Hodgkin bordered a new subtype, which under the name of nodular lymphocyte-rich classical Hodgkin's lymphoma in the WHO was taken -Classification, predominant lymphocyte-from the nodular non-classical Hodgkin's lymphoma from. This clarified the diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease - clinically relevant. Stein contributed to the finding that the Hodgkin diseases represent malignant lymphomas and originate from B cells of the germinal center reaction. Stein was also instrumental in the molecular definition of Burkitt's lymphoma . In 2015, Stein and his team succeeded in producing a monoclonal antibody against mutated CALRETICULIN . Stein is the author or co-author of more than 900 scientific papers published in international journals.

In 1989, Stein founded the International Lymphoma Study Group with Peter G. Isaacson (London) . With this group, Stein played a key role in defining the first international consensus and biologically correct lymphoma classifications (REAL classification and the WHO classifications 2001 and 2008).

With the support of the German Cancer Aid , Stein set up a supraregional consultation and reference center for malignant lymphomas and bone marrow diseases in 1991, which he continues to manage at his new place of work even after leaving the Charité. From 2002 to 2003 Stein was Chairman of the German Society for Pathology and from 2002 to 2004 President of the European Association of Hematopathology .

In 1982/1983 Stein founded UDAK Ltd. together with DY Mason, J. Scriven and the Dako company . in Oxford with the aim of making monoclonal antibodies for histopathological diagnostics available worldwide. For this purpose, UDAK produced all monoclonal antibodies for the Dako company from 1983 to 2004, which in turn was responsible for worldwide sales.

After his retirement, Stein founded Pathodiagnostik Berlin in 2010 , a private institute for tissue diagnostics, to which he transferred the Berlin Reference and Consultation Center for Lymphoma and Hematopathology. Stein also founded the HistoGene Company H&C GmbH , a company for the manufacture and production of diagnostic monoclonal antibodies.
