Elmwood Park is a place in Cook County in the US state of Illinois , about ten miles west of the Chicago Loop and southeast of the Leyden Township between Chicago and the Des Plaines River .

history

Elmwood Park, Saint Celestine, Catholic Parish - Summer 1981

In the 1840s, farmers were the first to settle in the area around what is now the town, which was then still called Orison. The laying of tracks by the Chicago & Pacific Railroad attracted speculators who bought up smaller farms and prepared the area for housing development. With the suppression of agriculture, the place was renamed Elmwood Park. and officially founded in 1914. The first mayor was Merritt Marwood.

In the years between 1920 and 1928 the place was further developed. A school, churches and a meeting house were built. The population continued to develop. After the Second World War, 18801 lived and in 1971 more than 27,000 inhabitants lived in the village.

Demographics

According to the census in 2010, there were 24,883 inhabitants in the village. 20.8% of the population was younger than 18 years, 13.9% was older than 65 years.
