Harald Wessel

Harald Wessel (born February 12, 1930 in Wuppertal ; † August 16, 2021 in Blankenfelde-Mahlow near Berlin) was a German editor, journalist and book author.

Life

Harald Wessel was born in Wuppertal in 1930 as the son of a worker. In 1946/47 he worked as a functionary of the Free German Youth in Thuringia . In 1948 he joined the SED . He began to study biology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1948/49 . He was an employee in the Ministry for Popular Education (GDR) (1955/58). A postgraduate at the Humboldt University of Berlin , he finished 1959 with a doctorate to the Dr. phil. From 1963 to 1990 he was a member of the editorial board of New Germany. There he was head of the department for propaganda and science. From 1981 to 1990 he was Deputy Editor-in-Chief of New Germany. He appeared in numerous articles against Soviet perestroika . Harald Wessel was a member of the youth commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED . From 1990 he wrote as a freelance journalist primarily for the daily newspaper “ Junge Welt ”. In addition to his journalistic work, Wessel wrote numerous books on various topics, including several biographies. Wessel died in August 2021 at the age of 91.
