The University of Rajshahi (also called Rajshahi University ; Bengali রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ) is a state university in Rajshahi , the third largest city in Bangladesh . It was founded in 1953 and at that time was one of two universities in what was then East Pakistan . Today it is the second largest university in Bangladesh after the University of Dhaka .

history

A number of public educational institutions were opened in Rajshahi as early as the British colonial era , such as the Rajshahi Zilla School (1836), Rajshahi College (1873) and a public library ( Rajshahi Public Library , 1884). During a visit to East Pakistan in 1952, the then Prime Minister Nurul Amin promised that a second university for East Pakistan would be set up in Rajshahi (alongside the existing Dhaka University). The corresponding law (Rajshahi University Act 1953 - East Bengal Act XV of 1953) was passed by the Provincial Assembly of East Bengal on March 31, 1953 and published in the Dacca Gazette on June 16, 1953 after the governor's signature . In the following year, the university began teaching with 12 colleges, 68 teachers and 161 students (including five women). In 1961, the university moved to the current campus at Motihar.

Others

The university has been the site of political conflicts several times in its history. It played an important role in the autonomy movement of East Bengal and a large number of students and members of the teaching staff perished between 1969 and 1971. There is a small museum on the campus that commemorates the events of the loss-making War of Independence in 1971.

On December 24, 2004 the economics professor Mohammad Yunus and on February 1, 2006 the geology professor S. Taher were murdered. Taher's murder was obviously personal (the instigator was a work colleague), while Yunus was killed by two militant Islamists . Several death sentences were passed against the convicted perpetrators and masterminds by the competent courts.

In December 2007, there were riots and demonstrations by members of the university against the "trustee government" under Fakhruddin Ahmed , which ended in prison terms for various professors and students.

Before the secular Awami League government under Sheikh Hasina came to power after the parliamentary elections in 2008 , the university was regarded as a certain gathering point for Islamist groups. On November 16, 2014, the sociology professor Shafiul Islam, who had spoken out against the full veiling of women, was attacked by militant Islamists and killed with machetes . Student demonstrations against the murder in several locations followed.

In 2015, several predominantly secular and “progressive” professors reported that they had repeatedly received threatening blackmail calls demanding money and were now afraid for their lives. The police suspected criminal gangs, including those from the communist environment.

On April 23, 2016, the English professor at the University of Rajshahi Rezaul Karim Siddique was attacked by strangers and hacked to death with machetes. The pattern of the assassination attempt was similar to that which has been carried out by Islamists repeatedly against well-known secularists or publicly professed atheists for several years . A little later, an Islamist group confessed to the act. Siddique had run a music school and published a literary magazine - both circumstances that could have caused displeasure among the Islamists.
