Harriet Bruce-Annan

Harriet Dansowaa Bruce-Annan (birth name: Grace Akosua Dansowaa Ani-Agyei ; * 1965 in Accra , Ghana ) is a Ghanaian programmer living in Düsseldorf . She is best known as the founder of Hilfsverein African Angel , the children from the slums Accra Bukom supports and allows them an education.

Live and act

Bruce-Annan was born in Accra in 1965. She spent her childhood in the Adabraka district. She regularly visited her grandmother, who had to live in the poor district of Bukom. She was already aware of the suffering there in childhood. Thanks to her uncle's help, she studied programming in Ghana. Her first job was there in a German computer company. In 1990 she emigrated to Germany with her husband after he had promised her better education in Europe. Due to several cases of abuse, she fled to a women's shelter in Düsseldorf . There she worked first as a nursing assistant, then as a toilet attendant at the Düsseldorf trade fair and in the pub Zum golden Einhorn , Ratinger Straße . Here she began to raise money and use it to support orphans in the slums of Bukom in Accra. Together with six other people, she founded the African Angel association on September 15, 2002 , which supports children from the poor district of Bukom, especially orphans , and finances their school and professional training.

Bruce-Annan was invited to a conference of the Berlin Senate in 2008 . There the role of knowledge in international migration was discussed. In 2009 Bruce-Annan was seen in the television programs NDR Talk Show and Markus Lanz . Bruce-Annan has been touring Germany and Austria for several years to present her project.

Awards

On March 31, 2011, at a gala in Berlin by the magazine Bild der Frau, she was chosen as the “heroine of everyday life” and presented with prize money of 30,000 euros. On the occasion of International Women's Day in March 2013 she was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.
